This time of year, there are a multitude of preseason rankings of NFL teams and also players by position. I rarely put any stock in those rankings.

But every year at this time, we begin see all the NFL “experts” telling us the teams that will make the playoffs and win the next SB. And the over-hyped player rankings by position. The truth is, most of this stuff is based on prior, most recent performances.

And every year, many Cowboys fans are surprised and offended that our team and most of our best players aren’t getting any “respect”. There should be no surprise on that because we haven’t done much as a team for so long to gain much respect.

Here’s the simple truth about “respect:
  • It’s always earned by winning.
  • Teams must win big games to get it.
  • Individual players get it by making big plays in big games- NOT JUST STATS.
So when the next preseason rankings come out and our Cowboys get little or no respect, don’t be surprised. Just hope like I do that this team can finally earn some real respect by winning something that matters!

Simple minded fans may base giving respect on wins or big plays in big games but that’s not fair at all. There’s a lot of players on this team who I have much respect for. Not going to mention any names because the haters will try and pick apart each one. But it’s extremely naive to base giving respect to players based on just your criteria.

Sometimes I think Fantasy football has tainted the views of fans and what really matters. Stats are important- kind of. They are important if you’re winning. But if you lead the league in yardage passing but are losing, who cares?
I think it depends on how much success you have.

Winning championships isn’t required to receive respect.

The league has had many great QB’s and talents that had very exciting and productive careers without being on teams who won a championship. It’s why we have individual awards like All Pro, MVP and HOF to celebrate great talents which aren’t always on a winning team.

Fans basing respect on wins, aka results? How "simple minded" of them.

Clearly, the enlightened fan gushes daily over people he doesn't know - or even know he exists - based solely on what uniform they're wearing.

Making the playoffs 7 times in 21 seasons doesn’t garner much respect.

7 days including today for the 1st practice. :muttley:

This feels like a ....we (positive) fans are being yelled at for standing up for our team...thread
This will be another thread win for the whiners. :lmao2:

I respect all our players. They have worked extremely hard just to be at this level. But that’s not the kind of respect I’m referring to. I’m talking about respect based on what you have accomplished as a team.

When many of our own fans don't have respect for this team and it's players, no one else will either.

You’re speaking of the franchise though not this particular roster or players.

Not many more critical than I am of this franchise this era but we have to be careful not to lump each team all together.

They all stand on their merit while the one constant throughout can be held more accountable and responsible. And which gives this franchise less respect but this core of talent shouldn't necessarily be held to the same standard .

I’m pretty sure Dak, Zeke and this core of talent don’t really care or feel attached to what’s transpired before they arrived unlike our horrid ownership.

Jazz, IMO this thread is about encouragement. I encourage everyone to hope we earn respect by winning big games again. What’s “whiny” about that?

Secondly, I’m always amused by the idea that someone swoops in early in a post they don’t like and says it’s about “whining”. This is an opinion forum. Whining, cheering, laughing…whatever. It’s all part of a forum of opinions. Including your opinion that this will be “a thread win for the whiners”. That’s why this place exists.

You are right when you suggest the Cowboys aren't winning and thus have earned no respect. However something has to account for what seems to be respect when the schedule makers/networks continue to give the Cowboys the maximum allowable primetime games year after year.

This team has earned nothing but disrespect since 2016 and they pretty much deserve all of it IMHO. You want to earn my respect? Stop sucking balls.

Bad coaching and poor defense has been the hallmark of this team for 25 years in general. Offense has been the strength. QB has been the strength over the last 15.

This team isnt winning diddly until the coaching and defense get up to par with the offense. We already wasted Romo's entire career and half of Dak's. Chances are we will continue to waste the rest of it.

No I base it on seeing Witten keep on running after losing his helmet or Gallup bailing out playing 2nd fiddle to Coop and CeeDee. I could go on and on.

Ok but you did put in the caveat on players which is what I was responding to.

IDK. This core of talent had twice come within a drive from playing for a conference championship . Have we been disappointed last couple years. Of course.

But I’d argue they have gained more respect throughout the league than some fans are presenting. The bigger argument is our franchise doesn’t have the respect. I feel this is being lumped in together and only reason I’m responding as such.

I can’t imagine that Dak, Zeke and this offense aren’t respected around the league despite not having more success.
