The Spin?

Honest question here:

In re-watching Sunday's game vs Cleveland, one key thing stood out to me.

The spin move.

Shaun Rogers executed a spin move that left Corey Procter helpless and holding his jersey. That got me to thinking about how rarely I see the Cowboys use the technique.

Seeing players like Freeney employ it so well got me wondering about why Ware doesn't.

Is it maybe just me not seeing the Cowboys use it when in fact they do, or is it something they don't coach their players to use and maybe that's why Procter seemed so unprepared for it?

Maybe it's not a move that he's as comfortable with using? Without talking to DWare himself I really wouldn't know the answer to that.

That's a possibility, but I don't remember seeing any Dallas defenders using the move.

Am I just 'misremembering' or is it possibly something the coaching staff doesn't teach or prefers the team not use?

The spin move can be really hard on knees and some coaches don't want the defender to take their eyes off the QB or the ball, even for the instant of time the spin takes. They prefer you push the blocker back and collapse the pocket.

A lot of the time defensive players are playing a gap, if you do a spin move, you might be spinning yourself, or finding the lineman pushing you right out of that gap (since they'll be able to push you from behind if you're not quick enough). What happens if you spin, and the RB or QB ends up running in the hole you opened up by spinning?

Obviously on passing plays this isn't that big of a deal. But, coaches will usually get on your butt if they see you moved yourself out of your gap, for whatever reason.

It also takes your eyes off the play, for a brief moment.

I thought I read Vela talking about how our coaches were teaching the spin move in camp this year...

other then that play--I thought Proctor played well.......I give him a B

I doubt Procter would have graded out as highly if Shaun Rogers' "Siragusa Slam" attempt on Tony Romo had successfully injured him.

Overall, he played well, but his gaffes were glaring and could have cost this team dearly.

That's what I was thinking, that the Dallas coaches don't like the move and would prefer that their players don't use it.

A policy that I don't necessarily agree with.

While I agree with some of the points against using it, I would counter that it's a highly effective move when executed properly and I would encourage certain defenders to utilize it under the proper circumstances.

I'm probably wrong, but, I thoughty I saw Tank to it once in the game and got good pressure on the QB?

But other than that, I don't see it much...

It is a widely kept secret, but like Derek Zoolander, Ware can't turn left.

And I hear he's not a good eugoogalizer either!

The spin move is suceptible to the run and some coaches fear that you're more likely to get injured, so that's why a lot of teams avoid it. The Colts love to use the spin move (not just Freeney) and it's no coincidence they are terrible against the run.

Proctor was whiffing on basic pass rush moves. I think the issues Proctor will have MNF is with stunts.

YAKUZA

Ware uses it from time to time. I don't think the other d-linemen or Ellis are that adept at doing a spin move. Shaun Rogers is a pretty good athlete for his size and can pull it off. I can't see Canty or Spears being that effective with it.

I agree.

I think the move requires a good deal of balance and flexibility and that's a trait I don't think Ellis or Canty have a lot of.

I would probably only like to see Ware and Spencer use the move and then only in long-yardage passing situations.

Guys like Freeney have made a career off the move and I think adding it to his list would make Ware even more dangerous.
