DeMarcus Lawrence was a top 10 dominant NFL defender in 2017.

His run defense was stout. He played some pass dump offs as well as I’ve ever seen.

And pass rush? He was second in the entire sport in sacks with 14.5. I truly believe the total would have been higher had he not been so frequently held in the latter part of the year—during a long stretch of games where the league’s referees refused to call a single holding call against Cowboys opponents.

Tank’s game doesn’t seem to have any real weakness. He’s strong, quick and savvy smart. He’s not a pass rushing specialist, but a complete player.

I suspect our reservations about DeMarcus are mainly his health (back) and upcoming contract negotiations.

He is playing for big bucks this year and a for a huge payday next spring.

I suspect he will have another very good season.

He had a couple sacks he lost, because of penalties on other defensive players.

I do too. I neglected to mention in my OP that Lawerence also seems to be a class act. He tutors younger players and seems like a great leader.

And...this is key...he’s only 26. So he’s got some peak years in front of him.

Maybe he will get 20 sacks, lead the league and we can trade him for a first and a third.

That won’t be an option. He won’t be under contract. Not ours to trade.

I think if it’s week 8 or so and he’s looking good, we’ll need to seriously consider giving him the big money. And it will be a huge check.

Reservations
- Diminished production in the back half of last year
- Back issues
- Suspension history

This year, he could eliminate the first and mitigate the second.

Tank has been the best player in camp. Tearing it up!

It could have holes but we do not know. He has not been consistent which is why he was tagged. I hope he balls out this year to earn the big contract.

His back issue is one important point of course.

But also relevant is his play. He had 7 very good games as a passrusher but after that he disappeard.
Sure it didnt help him when Irving came back and they paired him with Irving. But a player who wants to be payed as a top End should elevate players around him not suffer from them.

In essence DLaw had 7 games where he was top notch ad then 9 games where he was just good. For a guy who played his 4th season that to me is not enough to justify a contract he wants.

DLaw right now to me is a very good LDE. He is no pass rusher but he needed be one at his position. 10 sacks per season would sufice if we can find a very good RDE to complement him.

Lets see if he can stay healthy and have another season like 2017. Even the last 9 games would be ok for me to pay him 8 or 9 mills/year. But on a very insentive ladden deal. Nothing longterm guaranteed with his injuriy history.

Man Tank defines the word stud. Plays meaner than Ware did. Love the motor. I have a feeling he will beat his 14.5 sack total. Just stay healthy tank and the world is your oyster

The last line i totally agree with. I can see him with more sacks than 2017 IF he stays healthy

He was a stud in 2017. I give you that.

But to put Wares "Meaness" as something to be compared to is not the right way to start an argumentation ;-). Meaner then Ware doesnt exactly equate to being mean.

I totally agree. I don't necessarily blame the Cowboys for taking a wait and see approach, but I do think that he's not only going to match his 2017 numbers, but exceed them.

And those contract numbers will go from $17 million to closer to $20 million a year.

Can we do that on the franchise tag at this point? I thought that window was closed?

lol who is arguing. Not me with you for sure. lol, yes Lawrence Taylor was mean

Nice talkin with you fine gents. Some of you guys make me laugh and that is a very good thing

keep this in mind.... ladies and gentleman, take my advice, take off you pants and slide on the ice ;)

night guys, laugh often, live hard, and don't snore in bed... wifey hates that

My favorite thing about him is his willingness against the run. Most pass rushers won't do that.

If that back holds up this year, pay him.
