The trade to 31 mock

I've did this mock before but i didn't really believe at the time that the idea could actually happen on draft day. If no Oline or Dline players worth pick 18 aren't there then I think it's almost inevitable that we're going to see a trade down.

So for this mock Dallas trades pick 18 for 31, 61, and 93.

Rd 1. 31. Kawaan Short DT PURDUE-not the sexy pick for this team but a guy who when motivated can dominate.

Rd 2. 47. Giovanni Bernard RB UNC-not the Tarheel most wanted by Cowboys fans but a guy who IMO is the best RB in this draft.

Rd 2. 61. DJ Swearinger S South Carolina- He may go a lil higher or a lil lower according to what mocks you look at but I really don't care, if he's still on the board at this point you draft him because he's one tough son of a gun.

Rd 3. 80. Travis Frederick OG/OT Wisconsin- 3rd round for Oline help? Yes I wouldn't reach for Long and Pugh in the 2nd when a better, more proven football player is available in the 3rd.

Rd 3. 93. Bennie Logan DT LSU-Hatcher and Rat aren't getting any younger and with the depth provided in this draft at DT, doubling up is an option.

Rd 4. 114. Gerald Hodges LB Penn St-Another guy from Linebacker U who can help provide depth and possibly challenge Durant to start.

Rd 5. 151. Chris Faulk OT LSU- Injury Concerns never shy Jerry away from making a pick but usually is 3 rounds earlier, Faulk has played the best of the best in the SEC, could be a steal in round 5.

Rd 6. 185. Dion Sims TE Michigan St- Provides a good 3rd blocking TE to replace Phillips and according to his combine numbers a little more athletic then suspected.

Now I hope we're able to stay at 18 and snag either Cooper, Warmack, Richardson, Lotuleli (Pipe Dream) but if not a trade down not bad as long as we stay true to our board and add talent not special teams players.

same issue as with other trade down drafts... collects mediocre players with big names who dont fit in dallas as starters right now.

a small trade down from 18 might happen but i am fairly certain we will not drop all the way to 31.

kawann short is the ultimate boom or bust guy and probably not a rkog. he has been a popular mock selection because he has a lot of talent and can possibly fall to 47 at a position of need. making him our first overall selection would be very scary indeed.

looks like a great back ups draft so i hope they can help on special teams.

Incorrect, and somewhat of a silly analysis. Short, Frederick, Hodges, and DJ all have a very good chance to start Day 1. Faulk, Gio, and Logan could also eventually be starters. This is a draft class that is short on "big names," but deep on guys who can contribute early, so a trade down makes complete sense. This isn't my favorite mock, but if anything it has more early contributors than most I've seen, so your statement that it's full of "great back ups" is very vexing.

I would love to get that trade from San Fran, but the trade value is WAY in our favor.

(18) = 900
(31) 600 + (61) 282 + (93) 128 = 1010

They would have to be completely smitten by somebody. Other than that, I like it.

I think Bernard is great, but taking a RB at 47 kind of kills this draft.

I'm a UNC fan and Gio always seems to have nagging injuries that causes him to miss plays. Reminds me too much of Felix, don't think he's tough enough to last very long in the NFL.

It's a great year to find a back in rounds 3-5

No, they do not. NONE of them do.

Short has to beat out Jason Hatcher or Jay Ratliff. Very long shot.
Frederick may compete but a r3 rookie beating out guys with double digits starts under their belt? Unlikely. Neither Livings nor Bern were full go last year. Beating them out won't be easy.
Hodges would have no shot. Perhaps you need to refresh yourself on our LB corps.
DJ? Maybe. But he's battling guys like Will Allen, Barry Church, Matt Johnson. At best a long shot to start day 1.

What was the last non-1st rounder to start day 1 in Dallas? Spencer didn't do it. Sean Lee didn't do it. Bruce Carter didn't do it. No OL has done it in forever.

You guys have unrealistic expectations for non-elite rookies.
You don't find many Jason Wittens in the draft.

Did Witten start day one? I thought he backed up Campbell for a while.

Yeah
The 93rd pick is out of the question.
Odds are that the trade would be 31 + 61 + maybe a 6th.

The last two years, the team trading up has almost always paid less than chart says they should...not by a ton, but it's usually less, not more.

yes, he did.

i can't identify the last Cowboys rookie to start game 1 that wasn't a first rounder.

it is really rare.

and as phenomenal as guys like Dez Bryant look they didn't start early on.

that's another reason i give Claiborne such support.

the cowboys were an injured 8-8 team not a 4-12 healthy team. sean lee, bruce carter, jay ratliff, barry church, matt johnson, costa... they all come back wanting starting jobs badly and they are already here unlike the potential draftees we wont even know for a couple weeks.

Good job with the write ups and it is good that you indicated that you were only trading down because Cooper, Warmack, etc.. were off the board.

I have a few issues with some of the players.

Rd 1. 31. Kawaan Short DT PURDUE
If you're going to put a player in your mock with widely reported work-ethic issues, you should make a note of why you think those issues are not relevant.

Rd 2. 47. Giovanni Bernard RB UNC
The 2nd RB is probably a bigger need than many people believe; however, Bernard would need to be an overwhelming talent to pass up the many other talented players that will be available in the 2nd round.

Rd 2. 61. DJ Swearinger S South Carolina
Good pick and it is good that you noted that he might go earlier.

Rd 3. 80. Travis Frederick OG/OT Wisconsin
Not a good scheme fit, IMO. He has slow feet. I would much prefer Schwenke.

Rd 3. 93. Bennie Logan DT LSU
Good pick.

Rd 4. 114. Gerald Hodges LB Penn St
OK.

Rd 5. 151. Chris Faulk OT LSU
I don't think he falls to the 5th.

Rd 6. 185. Dion Sims TE Michigan St
I'm not sure about this pick. He has a felony conviction and multiple injury issues.

Bill Nagy did it in 2011. He was really coming on before his injury in 2011. Then he broke his leg missing all of last year. It is a shame we lost him by waiving him before putting him on IR because I still think he has value as a jack of all trades types (OG, C, blocking TE) and he can start without embarassing himself at any of those positions.
