Simple, really: the guy appears incapable of throwing the underneath stuff. World class gun, but no touch (his apparent inability to throw a decent fade is further evidence of this). And I'm not just referring to the pass to Glenn at the end of the game. Seems to me that, more often than not, when he tries to make a pass underneath, he's well off target. But maybe someone who tapes the games can go back and do an analysis to see if I'm wrong.
Nope. You aren't wrong. And that is one thing that Vinny has all over Drew. The accuracy and touch on short routes.
You have to understand with Bledsoe it's two different things that cause him not to be effective throwing short passes. #1 are his mechanics. He's just not a setup-quick and throw sort of QB. #2 is that he absolutely hates to throw short--- hates it. You can tell even when listening to him that he detests it.
The Bills thought they solved that over the last half of last season but the Pittsburgh game was a car wreck. Repeatedly Drew pressed for the big play ignoring wide open underneath options. And the Bills braintrust snapped. The result is what we have now.
The whole quandary is that while Bledsoe wants to throw deep on every play, the fact is that defenses have taken that away for the most part. They have since the mid-season mark of 2002. Everyone knows that Bledsoe is much less effective when throwing short--- and he becomes frustrated.
BUT if you allow him to "air it out" then you'll end up with a few big plays but the negative plays (sacks, picks and fumbles) will cause this to be a "3 & out" offense for the most part.
I have very good reasons for not being overly warm when it comes to Drew Bledsoe. And it has nothing to do with personal feelings. It has everything to do with his abilities upon the football field and the lack there of.
