The Truth About Parcell’s Departure
We will probably never get both sides of the story of Parcell’s departure from America’s Team, but I have a sneaking suspicion that as soon as Parcells gets an opportunity, he will give his side. He might have a book deal in place, or he might just be classless enough spew his side as soon as he gets off of a plane in New Jersey. I’ve been around for a long time and I’ve watched both Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells interact around the league. The following is how I loosly interpret the events leading up to Parcells departure.
The fact is that Parcells and Jerry were in a huge pissing match that culminated with Jerry telling Parcells that he was welcome to leave in a dignified manor instead of escorted. Does anyone remember watching the ups and downs of Parcell’s expressions this year on the sidelines and in the post game press conferences? I became aware of the pissing match when Jerry Jones revealed that he and Bill were not on the same page about sticking Romo in at QB. It was obvious that Bill did it to piss of Jerry and he would have had the first and last laugh if Romo would have done well in that first Giants game. Well, it didn’t happen. Romo threw an interception on his first pass and then led the Cowboys to a 21 point deficit. If you watched Bill’s press conference that night, he was sort of begging for his job and / or thinking that he was about to be fired.
We might never know what went on behind the scenes, but we know that Jerry didn’t have Parcells escorted out of Texas Stadium that night. Then Romo began playing well against bad teams and Parcells was in Jerry’s face all the time. He appeared rejuvenated. He thought he had the last laugh.
Does anyone remember the day they cut Mike Vanderjact? I remember thinking that was fairly sudden for a veteran kicker that Jerry spent a lot of money on. At the time they didn’t even have a back up on the roster. In addition, Parcells gave more chances to no name kickers the year before, why cut Vandy that suddenly? There is a huge chance that this was a screw you to Jerry from Billy Boy. Well, for TO’s sake, he is lucky that Romo tanked the rest of the season or he would have been the next screw you. Bill liked picking the players; he wasn’t going to be told who he was going to start. This ultimately led to his demise as Romo continued to suck at the game of football. When the Saints kicked Romo’s *** on national television, Parcells knew it was over. He would be gone at the end of the season. He knew that Romo wouldn’t make it far in the playoffs, but he still had an outside shot. The irony is that his dignity now depended on the fumble prone hands of that Monday night screw you he delievered to Jerry Jones on national TV. When Romo put an exclamation behind Bill’s bad QB decision that night in Seattle, bill was done for sure. If he stayed in Dallas, he would forever be linked to his failed decisions. He didn’t get the last laugh.
Although I’m sure that Jerry Jones would have wanted it the other way on this outcome, Jerry always get the last laugh.
Bill, every time you watch a Cowboys game for the rest of you life, I want you to remember that feeling as Jerry told you that you wouldn’t be back. Also, you owe me a superbowl.
