Yes Romo has been coached to be cautious with the ball. Managing the game isn't exciting but we'd be 2-0 if any one of about 6 player mistakes didn't happen, his included.
Romo has been a different QB for the last three years or so. Do you remember when he said that they were changing his style of play to be more like Tom Brady? I think it started then. When he was at his best, he was much more like Farve. Thank Garrett for the change. He took away a part of Romo's game that made him special. In other words, Garrett ruined him. The stats look great at times, the results don't.
Dez doesn't drop that deep ball we win the game. And now here we are.
The problem is that we should not have to rely on just one play to decide whether we win or lose. With the talent we have we should be lighting up the scoreboard.
Romo is structurally suspect. His rib injury will hinder him for how long, we don't know but it was evident that his mechanics suffered in the second half because of it.
The defense is still a work in progress. They should get better but enough to carry a team with a propensity for conservative game-planning and play-calling? I'm not so sure. The Cowboys face the same dilemma that has dogged them since Garrett took over ... an unbalanced, schizophrenic offense that becomes its own worst enemy, especially on the road, where Garrett's offense has failed to score over 20 points 21 times since 2007.
Look down the Cowboys schedule and determine which games the Cowboys will win by more than 7 points and that will largely determine the likelihood that they will make the playoffs and have success. Why?
2006-08, 37.5% of Cowboys games were decided by a touchdown or less; since Garrett took over the coaching reins in 2010, a staggering 69% [29 of 42 games] of their games have been "close." This is problematic; in an NFL landscape in which a close game can turn on a flukey, chance moment - a fumble, a controversial officials' ruling, a deflected pass, a slip on the turf - the best way to be a winning team is to avoid being in a situation wherein weather, a bad call, or just plain, dumb luck can determine the outcome.

It wasn't just one play. A missed INT by Carter, a missed INT by Allen, the drop by Dez, the sack in the red zone, Romo being off target at the end. It all adds up.
This. Fair or unfair, the onus of wins and losses falls directly on Romo far too often. The truth is: No one else on the team is stepping up to make game-winning plays on a regular basis.
