The unexpected blitz

One of my biggest Garrett era frustrations was the way our defense blitzed. Every opposing team easily saw a blitz was coming, and would simply pick it up. We may have had the most ineffective blitzes in the NFL.

Of course, the ability to get pressure on the QB without blitzing is of paramount importance, but it's good to be able to throw an offense off balance from time to time by blitzing. But the blitz must come as a surprise; otherwise it's worthless.

What do you guys think? Do you think this D will use the blitz effectively, and no more of this practically saying over a PA, "Hey, guy's we're blitzing our linebacks on this play."

Teams often show blitz because they want the QB to throw it to his hot route. Most hot routes are short, so the QB can get the ball out of his hands quickly. The defense then tackles the hot route receiver short of the first down. It's a tactic used on third downs quite often.
.
Teams show blitz sometimes, then don't blitz. They do this so they'll know who the QB's hot route receiver is. But to also to see if they can trick the QB, into throwing it to his hot receiver, hoping for an interception.

So showing your blitz has its advantages and that's why all teams do it.

I trust Quinn, so I am content to see what he's got cooked up for the season.

I think I trust Quinn, Parsons, and Kearse more with blitzing then Garrett’s defensive staff and players.

It's very hard to totally surprise a QB with a blitz. As the QB gets to the line he's either going to suspect a blitz, or at the very least identify those that can potentially blitz.

The best a D can do is try to use numbers to their advantage, or show blitz right before the snap.
