The unvarnished truth about respect

Every year, the past several years, I’m amused by threads from my fellow Cowboys fans griping about the “lack of respect” we get from the national and even local media.

Not happy about the “lack of respect” this team gets? There is literally only one way to change that. By winning in the playoffs.

Other than Jerry and a few Cowboys fans, no one in the sports media gives a rat’s behind about how much this franchise is worth. Or for that matter how many “division titles” we have “won”. Deep playoff runs to SBs or at least NFC championships are where respect is earned. Hate to say it, but until we do something impressive in the playoffs, we won’t get any respect, and frankly that’s fair.

The term “America’s Team” was earned by the Cowboys in the 70s, arguably in their most successful playoff decade when they won 14 playoff games in 10 seasons. Those 90s teams weren’t too shabby either, winning 11 playoff games that decade. That’s when respect was showered like rain. And they earned it.

I’ve been a Cowboys fan for 55 years and since childhood, they have always been my favorite team. I still love the Cowboys but I also know that until the glass ceiling of playoff accomplishment has been shattered, there will be little “respect” given.

Let’s go win at least three playoff games this year! Respect will follow. And that’s fair.

Respect has to be earned. Jerry and his gang of puppets has done little to nothing the past 24 years to 'earn' the respect some fans complain there is a lack of.

Would be hilarious if someone good with photo shop or video editing, can put together a puppet show of jerry and his gang, past and present going over the past 24 years how the "process" is supposed to work.

Does this hold true for players as well... do they have to do "something" to gain respect, or is that based on the team they play for record and playoff success as well?

I’m not sure how much respect we’re going to get with Jerry. Even when we were winning our organization after Jimmy left was still laughed at.

What’s sad for much of the rest of the league is they aren’t handicapped with an egotistical owner and dysfunctional organization and still can’t find more success than we’ve had.

That’s who should be really embarrassed. We have a darn good built in excuse. They don’t.

Greggo, if we win a championship, respect follows. Doesn’t matter who’s in charge. We all know Jerry is a football fool the way he runs this thing, but if the Cowboys somehow win another Lombardi, Jerry will get some craved respect, although having the cash to sit at the craps table rolling 25 times before you win something isn’t exactly “respect worthy”.

There will be some no doubt. I’m not sure for example he received the respect he was looking for in SB XXX?

And if we do find that acorn I’m not sure his dysfunction ends.

There are great players who play on bad teams. But if a great player is on a bad team, they have to be truly outstanding to gain respect.

Great teams give great players context. A proper background and purpose for their talent to be noticed. IMO, In today’s fantasy football world driven by fans, there is too much emphasis on individual performance and not enough emphasis on team performance. Winning as a team is far superior to individual accomplishment IMO. It’s why I don’t care that much about individual stats.
