The Ups and Downs of the Draft

Another draft approaches in 3 weeks and speculation on who Dallas takes or doesn't will ramp up and up. Yet, not one fan nor media type can tell us who the picks are going to be in those first 11 picks. Usually ever year, we have a pretty good idea of who is going 1st because we normally have a hopefully great QB that becomes a cinch to go #1 to the team drafting there or from a team willing to mortgage the farm to come up and get him.

This year it is nothing but a roll of the dice. Not any mock nor analyst and certainly not a single fan can agree who the top 5 guys are much less the top 10 and those next 22 picks are literally all over the place with guys picked that on some draft boards are not only not in the top 32 but not in the top 100. It is truly just a guess as to what happens. You can guarantee that some players picked in the first and second rounds are not in the top 64 rated players by other boards.

We have seen predictions of having quite a few trades to predictions that no team will trade because it is to weak a draft to take a chance. It will probably fall somewhere in the middle but crazy things have and will happen, much like having the draft in Green Bay. I mean other than having the draft there, what is there to do in Green Bay. And the weather in April can be quite beautiful but could also see a snow storm of a foot of snow.

If someone can tell us who will be available at #12 when Dallas is on the clock, then maybe we could make an educated guess. Frankly, none of us have a clue of what the Dallas draft board looks like. None of us know who they think the best RB back in McClay and the coaches mind is nor who the 2nd best one is either. What is the coaching staff looking at that they would prefer to address first. Sure, we all hear the BPA, but really it is either the BPA at a position of need or BPA for the defense or offense of which Jerry deems more likely to help.

Could we trade up or trade down. Certainly we could, but again a trade up for Jerry is where he sees the value of the player and the cost. Same for a trade down if McClay has a similar grades on multiple guys they like and there is a team who doesn't want to miss out on a guy. Think there is a good chance we have 4 QBs go in the 1st round simply because you have roughly eight teams that need either a starter or a guy that could start but they want it for 2026. Those teams, IMO, are Tennessee, Cleveland, New York Giants, New York Jets, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Los Angles Rams.

If Tennessee and Cleveland go Carter and Hunter then you will probably see Giants go Ward and good chance New Orleans or Pittsburgh trade up. Could see Ward, Sanders and Dart all go in top ten but frankly none of them should. They are good just not great. Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Pittsburgh take Milroe at 21 unless they could move up for Sanders and wouldn't be surprised to see Rams take Shough. The value is always QB/LT/Edge in the draft. Yes, other positions are important, just not as important to success as those.

Enjoy reading all the mocks and comments, especially those that say this could never happen or no way this guy falls that far. Yet every year guys rise or fall for no apparent reason other that the fact that as fans we don't have all the facts. A guy could have a medical we don't know about or attitude that a team doesn't want to deal with or not a scheme fit, etc. I am a firm believer that many draft picks fail because a team tries to make them something they are not. The right situation for a player will always make that person better, never fails.

So good luck to everyone's mock and remember no mock is too crazy, just an opinion and frankly fun to do until the draft ultimately happens.

One guy might be great in one scheme, and horrid in another, and then get hurt.
And how do fans who haven't talked with any of these guys personally determine the heart and determination.

In the end, you could be the absolute best talent evaluator ever, love the Cowboys, and know how to get them to the Superbowl almost every year : And it would still be Jerry Jones team, and he would pick whomever he wants.

Mocking is pointless, as is responding on this board, but I still enjoy it and do it, and for me: That's what its all about.
