I needed a day to morn, but now I have questions:
Why didn't we kick a 52 yard FG on our 1st possession?
No 2nd guessing here, I felt we would and should have kicked it at the time. We had a new kicker that had to be a little nervous. What better way to get him settled down than attempting a 52 yard FG that you not "supposed" to make?
We have a very strong kicker. His strength is supposed to be his distance. He did kicked a 51 yard FG in our last preseason game.
I think he very well may have made it and the game may have played out differently. At worst he misses it and perhaps comes back and performs better on his next attempt.
Why so many bubble screens?
I don't know how these calls work. If Tony has no choice to not throw it once the ball is snapped. If his only opportunity to check off is pre-snap, but once he snaps it, he either has to throw it to the WR or throw it away.
I can't say. But what I can say is what I was seeing. And that that's the darn thing wasn't working. Whatever the Skins were doing, it was working too well and we needed to get off that play sooner. Perhaps after it didn't work for the 3rd time? But that's just me.
Why is our offense such a cluster duck?
I've consistently defended Garrett, but I now have a fairly strong theory on what's happening here.
It's something I believe I've seen before with other young coordinators and understand this is a theory from an ill-informed fan. I have no connections to the team or any real experience or credibility here. But here it goes....
Our offense it far too complex. It appears to me as if Jason wants an unstoppable/indefensible offense. IF everyone makes the right read and does exactly what they're supposed to do, every play should work
Well the problem here is that it opens up the possibility for far too many mistakes. There must be a way to dumb down what were doing to at reduce the errors and get everyone on the same page.
I believe David Shula way back in 1990 was accused of this. An offense soooooo complex, there was no way it could be run efficiently.
How could our game ending play not have two blockers on the Skins best pass rusher?
Now there's a number of things the Skins could have done on the last play. Obviously they could have gone with anywhere from 2 to 7 pass rushers.
Logic suggest on a game ending play from the 11 they'd probably go with 3-5 pass rushers and attempt to defend the end zone with as many people as possible.
BTW I don't care how much time the opposing QB has. With that little area to defend, no receiver should ever get as open as Roy did. On that issue alone the Skins deserved to lose. That and the previous play when no one covered our best receiver who could have scored with a perfect pass. Either way, they were just begging to get beat and deserved to.
But back to the game ending play. The defense was transparent on the last play. They were going with 3 rushers and made no attempt to disguise it.
And had their best pass rusher on our worst blocker.
HOW COULD WE NOT HAVE SLID PROTECTION TO DOUBLE HIM AND TAKE HIM COMPLETELY OUT OF THE PLAY?
Barron goes low, Davis slides over and goes high and Orakpo is put on his but and taken completely out of the play.
