We are still a long ways from knowing what the 2018 version of the Cowboys will be. Relax. We should all stop trying to predict or act like we know what this team is yet. None of us...repeat...NONE of us know what this team is going to be yet or how this season will turn out. It’s still August!
About a third of this forum is dead sure we are headed to Super Bowl glory no matter what we have at any position, and no matter who’s leading this organization. They will say “this train is bound for glory” no matter what. Nothing wrong with optimism even if some of it is seen through fan lenses.
And another third of Zone forum fans are twisting themselves into pretzels because of T-Fred’s bad medical news, or thinking we have a bottom rung “bus driver” QB (despite 2 years of good play) or worrying that we’re one injury away from a top 5 pick in the 2019 draft. Eoyore would be proud.
And the final third is probably not sure what this team is yet or what will happen this year. Count me in this group that doesn’t know yet what this team is. And I will add that I don’t think we will really know much about this team until probably October. It’s going to take some time for a lot of this new talent to find themselves within the team.
I really like the young talent that has been gathered on this team. We have more talent on defense than we’ve seen in over a decade. The offense even with T-Fred out for awhile has weapons. But the NFL doesn’t award trophies for talent (or how much cash you’re making Jerry). Like all teams, the scoreboard is all that really matters if you care about the kind of success that matters in pro football- winning (ahem, Mr. Jones)
The most important steps for this team will take place as these young guys learn to play together, and hopefully this somewhat new coaching staff finds ways to make adjustments in game and in season. The talent plus better coaching must result in wins.
I await the month of September like a starved dog about to be fed. I’m so sick of meaningless preseason games, watching too many guys playing for the Cowboys and our preseason opponents who will not be on a 53 man roster in September. Preseason games to me are like watching a movie with actors that haven’t memorized their lines yet. Or like eating a cake that wasn’t fully baked. No thanks.
And finally I’m anxious to see how this team develops over time. Don’t judge this book by its preseason cover or by even game #1 in Carolina. We are still a long way from knowing what this team will be. Hurry up September! And buckle your seatbelts boys and girls cuz we about to be on another wild, unpredictable ride called the NFL.
