I'm sorry. They aren't going to make $50M on Jeter jerseys. Thats just not going to happen. Hell, most people who want a Jeter jersey already have one.

Its hard to figure out but the Yankees certainly dont get 100% of a jersey sale. There is the jersey manufacturer, MLB and the retailer who all get a cut. So all those numbers people are throwing against your point arent pure.

The Yankees arn't morons.. but they arn't geniuses either. Far from it. They signed Jeter to whatever he wanted basically, as they should have. Its got nothing to do with finances.. as it rarely does with the Yanks. However, in this one case, the salary was warrented. Jeter IS the Yankees in this generation.

That being said, they've made plenty of mistakes with signings over the years, just like every other team. The difference is, they throw out ridiculous sums of money to try and make sure when they do make mistakes they still get some production. The reason their formula hasn't had success lately is because they try and buy all star teams and think they'll win, instead of trying to put together a team that has the intangibles and chemistry that it takes to go all the way.

What?? Oh no they didn't Jeter slipped the 6 yr $ 150 M number across the table and the Yanks slapped it back - this deal is a actually a pay cut and allows Jeter not to have to talk salary everyday. He is ONLY a year removed from an MVP candidate season in which the NYY won the WS and he was stellar from the Go to the End. He's getting his money more for his iconic status of course, but I expect him to rebound at the plate.

Nobody said they didn't make bad signings, but that doesn't make them a dumb club, EVERY team does that. The Yankees CASH PRODUCING COW allows them to bury mistakes.

What am I missing here? we just won the WS in 09' with plenty of "intangibles"

Wrong, wrong , wrong - 3000 Hits is going to smother your summer - it's going to be everywhere.

Derek Jeter has the number 1 facial recognition of any athlete in the US, over Jordan and Tiger.

He's a great guy and plays it clean off the field.

50 M? are you serious? Wait and watch, they'll make TONS of money this season alone with his chase for 3K.

You do realize the NYY have their own Network , right? and all they do is pump Yankee memories - they'll sell $10M alone off the post 3k hysteria.

You know why? People are stupid - the economy is brutal but people will still buy a pine tar cloth and signed ball from the day he got 3k for a cool $200.00.

No they dont get 100% of proceeds but it's simply ignoring the obvious to believe for a minute the Yankees wont get back 100% of Jeter's contract from proceeds of ALL Jeter related memorabilia.

In sports - in fact he out did Jordan and Tiger while both were top of their games.
You still do not get it?

That is beyond sad.

Once again, you said this...Derek Jeter has the number 1 facial recognition of any athlete in the US, over Jordan and Tiger.

No, he does NOT. The article you supplied as a link is ONLY about baseball, and was about "marketability" not "recognition." In fact, if you want to get downright technical, NO baseball player would appear in the top 10 most recognizable athletes and if one is looking for the MOST recognizable baseball player his name is Ichiro Suzuki, not Derek Jeter.Just the facts.

well he said US so i think jeter is more recognizable than ichiro just in the US. but having said that, there is no doubt in anyones mind that peyton manning is THE most recognizable athlete the last couple of years, and before that it was tiger, before that it was MJ. it has NEVER been jeter

Its not like over paying Jeter is going to stop them from landing other players. They bleed money left and right every year, it doesnt matter to them.

Yes, as i said.. you've won 1 World Series since 2000. Sad for a team who tries to buy up all stars every year and a team who has the highest payroll every year.

Clearly, there's a flaw in how they try and put their teams together. You can't buy championships every year.

That being said.. i haven't seen anyone provide any links or evidence here, but i definately believe Jeter is one of the most recognizable sports stars in the world. As popular as the yankees are across the globe, and with Jeter pretty much being the face of the Yankees for this generation, it just makes sense. Jeter IS the Yankees.

Edit: Also, just because your first proposal is high, that doesn't mean its what you're actually seeking to get. Its called negotiating. I have no doubt Jeter got what he wanted. He's still the highest paid SS in MLB.

The Yankees will make double their money - why? 3000 Hits, they will sell more merchandise than ever before.

Also, they own their own Network, the TUNE in amount of Casual fans will triple.
Are you serious? 3,000 hits? That isn't exact some big huge milestone like 61 or 70 or 2,216 or 755 that people really got into following. It will be a nice little achievement when he gets it. They may give him a plaque or something. But it won't exactly capture the nation's attention like Ripken, McGwire or Bonds did.

Fact is the Yankees are paying him for what he did in the past and not so much what he is expected to do in the future. Which is why no team even came remotely close to matching the offer. The exact same SS playing for any other team would probably have gotten 3 years, $25 million.

Considering that no player in MLB history has ever gotten 3000 hits while in a Yankee uniform (Rickey Henderson, Wade Boggs and Dave Winfield did in other uniforms), it's not that small of a deal.

It is for everyone except people living in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area and immediate surroundings. He already has the Yankees team record for most hits so every hit he gets from this point forward is something no other Yankee has done. And when he broke that team record, it got a nice mention on SportsCenter but the world didn't exactly come to a complete stand still.

People are not going to get all worked up when he accomplishes something that 27 men have already done. Now if he approaches Pete Rose, then that will be huge. Check back in with us in 2017 when he starts getting close to that.

:laugh2: Derek Jeter was just named top Brand in MLB, I gave you a link and people are disputing it :lmao2: :lmao2:

I love this place.

Jeter's facial recognition >>>All

Jordan & Tiger , in the US in 2000 were behind the Great Jeter. And prior. And he's been #1 a few times since.

You cannot argue fact.

Ichiro? what?

You guys realize that jersey sales that aren't in-stadium are distributed to all 30 teams right? So any in-store or online purchases you make of MLB merchandise doesn't directly support your team, it gets distributed.

That said, people making fun of the Yankees for signing him are nuts. They can afford it, and he's marketable. It's a decent deal for both sides.
