The Year Was 1991

All year long I felt like we were a year early. I couldn't believe we were the best team in the NFC. Of course I am shocked Green Bay was as good as they were too.

In 1991 I had the feeling the team was doing things right and preparing for a run. I felt the same earlier this year and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. When it didn't I thought maybe, just maybe...

In 1991, we qualified for the Wildcard Round with an 11-5 record. We won a 4 point squeaker over the Bears, and then got throttled in the Divisional Round by the Lions. I'll never forget that game because I lost a bet that required me to get the Lions logo shaved in one side of my head and the score in the other and go to work that day without a cap. I was bald the very next day of course as I got rid of all evidence.

Going into 1992 I just had a feeling we had arrived. 2008 isn't even close to arriving yet, and I already feel that way. Just as we weren't ready in 1991, we weren't ready this year.

It was a hell of a fun ride. One I enjoyed and am obviously quite sad is over. But I'm not heartbroken and just like 1991, I am not upset. Well, back then I was upset about the hair. This year I didn't bet my hair with anyone, though I do owe someone lunch.

There will be some changes this off season. Some good, some bad. We have 2 first round draft picks, and most of the critical players are signed long term.

I'm pretty down about today. No doubt about it. I still think we should have won in a runaway. I won't be sure about this team until December and beyond isn't an albatross. That's my focus for next year. Finish strong.

They were better than I hoped this year, but in the end fell short of my expectations. I can't describe it any other way.
1991 - coach Jimmy Johnson :)
2008 - coach Wade Phillips :(

Except hire a true GM which is what he really needs to do.

So with everyones thoughts going to our secondary, what do you propose that can be done?

I know that a 3rd CB would be an easy decision but does anyone really think that the Cowboys will part ways with Roy? And if so, what do you do? Start Hamlin (if he resigns) and Watkins? Do you try to resign Hamlin with the thought of drafting or signing a vet to play along side him? And suppose Hamlin gets a bigger offer somewhere else, now what?

I frankly don't know what will happen, but I just can't see going into next season with the same secondary.
we'll add a corner (likely Talib, Cason, etc) See what Hamlin and Watkins cna do with increased PT together. Rotate Roy in frequently.

We're close, but it's really hard to tell how close. I thought that the #1 seed was a sure sign, but the team didn't live up to the expectations it earned during the season. The Giants did their share to upset this Super Bowl run, but the team short-circuited way too much today. Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips must find a way to keep this team focused every single game. That's a key component of championship teams.

WE MUST get a serious corner with starting potential,,i would get samuel..they say he played as a shutdown corner this year.we must draft a RB in the 1st round with Addai potential...we must get another receiver with starter potential....squeeze another year out of glenn...develop canty into the beast he is becoming, get ratliff over there at end...develop an inside blitz....dump roy, move hamlin over to SS...he has heart and roy has lost his..

get romo over the hump...get free in there at LT playing as good as flozell but without the penalites...THEN

we will dominate

I don't dislike Wade either but I always thought he was more of a cheerleader as a head coach which doesn't bode well come playoff time.

only optimism I see is at least we didn't lose in the Super Bowl ;)

but Hos, we were the #1 seed, we beat the Giants twice, we beat Green Bay, we weren't a year too early

In this NFL, it's doesn't take much to get you to the top at all. GB is going to the NFC Championship game after they have had 2 straight terrible seasons.

No, we weren't which is why this is a choke. I'm saying I felt all year this was going to be like 1991. My feelings changed that this was the year. I like the team going forward. I haven't been able to say that since 1992 & 1993. I've been unhappy since Jimmy left.

I'm not unhappy. I like this team. I like our chances. A lot more than the rest of the NFC.

Green Bay was not terrible last year. They barely missed the playoffs.

What holes do you see on this team?

I say we need another stud wideout

Bowman/Kelly in the draft or FA

A strong safety

Ken Hamlin

A third corner

Cason in the draft

Possibly a Left tackle

Franchise Flo then Free/McQ/Marten

A second running back

FA or third rounder

A fullback

obsolete - though the anderson boy looked good

A punt returner

(see second running back)

The list is getting long...

that was frickin' easy.

We have holes and we've gotten away with an average defense all year long and at some point, your defense has to take over and ours didn't.

I know we sucked on offense, but great teams don't rely on that, unless you're NE who are an immortal.

i am sad what happened today. I just hope the off-season will improve all of our returning players, we get a great draft, and next year will be THE ONE.

This is the first year I've been on CZ, and I'm really glad I found it. I've learned a lot about football, about the Cowboys, and my pleasure in watching the game has exponentially increased since the beginning of the season.

there's to 2008:starspin

Can I add a special teams coach to your list?
