The idea here is that picks 1 - 7 start from Day 1, which is virtually impossible, but it was a fun exercise.

Here goes:

1. Cameron Jordan, DE, California
Disruptive pass rusher with strength to play the run well, Jordan has All-Pro potential and I love that his hands are already well ahead of most rookies coming into the league.
Replaces: Marcus Spears

2. Marcus Cannon, OG, TCU
Athletically gifted for a man his size. Would prefer if he were closer to 330 than 360 though.
Replaces: Kyle Kosier

3. Kenrick Ellis, DE/NT, Hampton
Come on, you had to know I'd get Ellis in here. He's versatile and allows us to jumble our look around just like Rob Ryan likes to do.
Replaces: Igor Olshansky

4. Marcus Gilbert, OT, Florida
Worked out well and has tons of starting experience.
Replaces: Marc Colombo

5. Ahmad Black, SS, Florida
Ran a slow 40 but his 10 and 20 yard splits were more in line with someone that runs a 4.5 to low 4.6. His size doesn't bother me much.
Replaces: Gerald Sensebaugh

6. Henry Hynoski, FB, Pittsburgh
I happen to think Gronk has some potential, but Hynoski has more.
Replaces: Chris Gronkowski

7. DeMarcus Van Dyke, CB, Miami (Fla.)
Okay so I cheated here. You try finding a starter in the 7th round.
Replaces: Dez on Special Teams

I think this is the most realistic mock I have seen to date for the position we are in and no heroic free falls by the top four, we are not reaching and taking most likely the best player available for out needs.

I know, I know.

No one will make it to #9 and no one will make it to our 7th round pick. :D

I don't see Van Dyke making it that far. As for Gilbert starting at RT, no way. He is a OG only. I would rather have Cannon at RT.

Like it all but still would like to see a RT some where. Also Black is not a SS in the NFL. He struggles at man cover. If anything he will be a FS and he isn't a starter.

What is the difference between a SS and FS, in your opinion?

My two cents:

Tyler Sash-Iowa, Ahmad Black:
Strong Safeties are basically smaller linebackers with speed. They're deployed to do much more than just double-team receivers or take on tight ends---they're not only instrumental in stopping the run, but they get MANY blitz calls that no FS will receive.

Aaron Williams- Texas, Marcus Gilchrist-Clemson
Free Safeties are more or less centerfielders for the secondary. They are much more a "read and react" position.

SS hit harder, blitz more, stay underneath in coverage. FS are the brains of the operation. Another point is that CB can be deployed to play FS, something you'll never see with SS.

Van Dyke has a super senior bowl week, 4th/5th round in reality is more likely. I really like the guy

depends on the scheme but I do get your point with respects to how the NFL is trending and what we have done with our safeties in past year. However, if we do run some 46, there will be a big difference. Teams that run a Tampa2 as there base defense also have some specific needs in what type of player they use at each safety position.

BTW, I like you 4th round pick also. He is who I hope we consider taking for RT.

Umm what? You got it all wrong. Black is a pure SS and will struggle immensely at FS. And he's good in man to man...

Also, good mock. Sometimes I wish we could forward some of these to re ranch!

I give you a standing ovation for that mock. Other than Van Dyke those all are legitimate starters and could be had in those rds.

no he wouldn't be a SS on this team. Have you seen him play? The guy is a FS in a Ryans defense.

just depends on the scheme. In Dallas and for RYan they FS is more of a zone player. One that can also tackle. Ryan likes guys that can hit, thats why I don't think they will take Moore. SS in Ryan scheme is more man cover deep that has the size to play up. Black plays back and deep most of the time and hardly ever matched up man on a TE or WR.

I don't think Black could start day one in the NFL, or he could start but you wouldn't want him to, I mean anyone can start and play.

Florida ran a total different defense than what Dallas runs. The usually had their CBs playing man with both safties playing zone.

Thanks all for the compliments. I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that a draft with 6 potential 1st year starters seems reasonable. :D

I'm not sure what part of the job description that you've put together makes it impossible for Black to play SS in that scheme.

You're saying we'd need more of a a large old school SS with range, like a Robert Sands?

As far as him not being ready to start, I think you've missed the entire point of the exercise. There aren't many 5th rounders that can start right away.

Can Cannon play RT as well? I think he has the athleticism but would need to keep his weight to around 340-350 lbs.

Edit. RT in the pros.

I would put cannon at RT before Gilbert. But the best thing to do for this OL is carimi at RT and Cannon at RG and sign Blaock for LG. Or resign Koiser for two years and some how find a way to draft Rackley who will need a year to develop and then release Koiser and start Rackley in 2012.

Next years draft get Guorde's replacement. I don't see any C in this years draft that I really like.

you said this is a mock with starters. If you don't think Black can start then don't say you think he can. Black just doesn't play like a SS. He is a FS. Now I don't really like black so it doesnt matter. If you want a day one starting SS. D Williams and Q. Carter are the two that I see fitting Ryans defense the best. Both play the way Ryan uses his SS.

Gawd I hate picking a DE in the first - and esp with 3-4

I mean we can get another Spears later on

I see only two difference makers in the first round on D

Petersen an Dareous

much rather take our chances on a OT

Well I think your dislike for Black explains most of it, you're probably the only one I've seen say Black is a FS only.

I'm not sure what you think a SS "plays like", either.
