While I hope the Cowboys' off-season doesn't begin for several more weeks, it surely will be interesting. I don't recall a time when there was enough talent on the roster to really allow Dallas to draft to the board.
Sure, there are needs: Youth and depth at DB, a young wideout with number one potential (and deep speed, if Terry Glenn's gone), a young backup QB, probably a RB, since Julius Jones appears to be a certain departure... but there isn't one hole so glaring that it dominates the conversation.
I'm not as certain as some others that Jerry Jones will confine most of his free agency interest to signing players already on the roster. He surely has seen what a "jolt" did for the Patriots. I don't expect him to break the bank, but I'd be surprised if there isn't one reasonably significant move for outside talent. And I agree that Wade Phillips could help in that regard.
Ciskowski seems to be a viable replacement for Ireland, and I've heard for years that Ciskowski is a top-drawer scout. And who knows... if Ireland was Parcells' pet project, and if Jerry Jones has long-term respect for Ciskowski, the latter might have as much or more influence than the former. I'm optimistic Ciskowski could do the job very well.
While I do believe that Jones likes to send out "smoke signals" to confuse folks about Dallas intentions for the draft and free agency, I have a feeling that his recent comment about wanting to add... I forget the word he used... dazzle or spark, whatever, to the offense, probably reflects his true thinking.
The Parcells era found Dallas putting lots of meat and potatoes on the table. Regardless of who gets fault/blame, Dallas now has a strong OL and some depth, a solid DL and some depth, a good LB corps and some depth... In other words, the Cowboys are in good shape with regard to the 12 meat and potatoes positions (the OL and the defensive front seven). Add the TE position to that, if you want.
Dallas probably could use one more home run hitter. The impact of Owens' loss is evidence. Besides, both Owens and Glenn are well north of 30.
I also recall when the Cowboys added Tony Dorsett to what was already a good offense. They traded up for some sizzle, and that worked out pretty well.
I doubt that a trade for McFadden is in the cards, as the price would be too high. But I look for Jones to try to find an impact offensive player, and if he doesn't think his draft positioning will allow him to get that done, he might look to make a trade or sign a free agent.
It should be fun, if nothing else.
