I am pretty sure he will be on with norm by tuesday.

It was fun watching the cowboys draft recap show last night.

When jerry was talking to the eagles on the phone and they gave their terms, jeff ireland jumped out of his chair and said to jerry whispering, take it take it, then he high fived wade and stephen.

Pretty funny. Tom ciskowski is a super important part of the front office, no one ever talks about him though.

So hopefully we will here from jeff by tuesday with norm.
I know a little bit about theebs' connections and I have remembered this quote since the Draft.

Maybe he'll expound more on this comment?

Also this one.

Without double checking i think off the top of my head jeff ireland was here and Parcells promoted him.

Also, Tom Ciskowski is basically just as important as jeff ireland. No one knows his name though, but he is a vital element to player personnel.

I believe the most important thing that happened with that group here, Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and Tom Ciskowski was that they decided on a direction, or a system. Then they started and have been continuing to target the types of players they want in that system and they have made a collective effort to value the draft and find quality human beings and quality football players.

they also did a very good job of finding undrafted free agents and targeting other teams practice squads. Kenyon Coleman, Scott Shanle, Corey Procter and a guy i wish had worked out Brett Pierce.

its silly to me the way people give credit and assign blame to different individuals for collective decisions.

Want to know who drafted demarcus ware? Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and Tom Ciskowski.

Want to know who Drafted Jacob Rogers? Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, Bill Parcells, Jeff ireland and Tom Ciskowski.

have we heard stories about each of them wanting or preferring one player over another, of course. Mostly by the media here in Dallas. We always hear about the rogers pick, but never about the ratliff pick. That is just the way goes.

I dont want larry lacewell around personally, or anyone that a hand in that team from 98 to 02. Lacewell and that group proved they could not either
(A) Find players who could play in the nfl, (B) Find players who could stay out of trouble (C) Find players who fit in with what they wanted to do, it seemed they had no direction of who they were and without a map you cant get anywhere. (D) Understand how to use the draft to their advantage.

This new group does all those things and i would hate to see it screwed up.

Oh hey man. I only know of him for two reasons!

1. Cbs 11 always shows him around draft time down at the texas pro day, all the scouts from around the country know him and he really seems to be well respected.

2. I buy a media guide every year. He is on the same page as jeff ireland, he is the college scout. He has been here a long time, I have never been sure of his role in the war room though. Norm has mentioned him a few times and so has mickey spagnola, but never really in depth.

sorry, I wish I had more to tell you. And I wish I did have some kind of connection!!!

Its just me guessing from reading the media guide all the time!!!

Wasn't he an assistant coach at New Mexico State University back in the 1980s or early 1990s?

If so, he would probably like to erase that from his resume. Congrats to him for overcoming it.

Here is something from an old "The Way We Hear It" item in Pro Football Weekly...

"The guy everyone expects to take over for retired director of college and pro scouting Larry Lacewell is Jeff Ireland, who has been the Cowboys’ national scout the past three years. But Lacewell’s departure indicates just how much head coach Bill Parcells is running the show these days. There are many in Dallas’ front office who aren’t thrilled with move and believe that assistant director of college scouting Tom Ciskowski was more deserving of the promotion."

Shaketiller, Nick Eatman said today on The Lunch Break, that Tom C (I won't attempt to spell his last name) felt slighted when they promoted Ireland over him. Eatman thinks Cis... can be an excellent replacement for Ireland, and you know Wade has been around a while to see a lot of the guys that are currently playing, so he should know who will make a good FA and who won't...

This whole thread just points out one thing to me - please, please, please don't bring Lacewell back in any important capacity.

He did? That is where I went and now only live about 3 miles off campus. I'll look into it more when I get a chance.

Amen, Amen, Amen.

I just shutter at the thought of returning to the great Lacewell-driven, Jerry-run draft hauls of Quincy, Tony Dixon, Dwayne Goodrich, Macey Brooks, et al.

While I hope the Cowboys' off-season doesn't begin for several more weeks, it surely will be interesting. I don't recall a time when there was enough talent on the roster to really allow Dallas to draft to the board.

Sure, there are needs: Youth and depth at DB, a young wideout with number one potential (and deep speed, if Terry Glenn's gone), a young backup QB, probably a RB, since Julius Jones appears to be a certain departure... but there isn't one hole so glaring that it dominates the conversation.

I'm not as certain as some others that Jerry Jones will confine most of his free agency interest to signing players already on the roster. He surely has seen what a "jolt" did for the Patriots. I don't expect him to break the bank, but I'd be surprised if there isn't one reasonably significant move for outside talent. And I agree that Wade Phillips could help in that regard.

Ciskowski seems to be a viable replacement for Ireland, and I've heard for years that Ciskowski is a top-drawer scout. And who knows... if Ireland was Parcells' pet project, and if Jerry Jones has long-term respect for Ciskowski, the latter might have as much or more influence than the former. I'm optimistic Ciskowski could do the job very well.

While I do believe that Jones likes to send out "smoke signals" to confuse folks about Dallas intentions for the draft and free agency, I have a feeling that his recent comment about wanting to add... I forget the word he used... dazzle or spark, whatever, to the offense, probably reflects his true thinking.

The Parcells era found Dallas putting lots of meat and potatoes on the table. Regardless of who gets fault/blame, Dallas now has a strong OL and some depth, a solid DL and some depth, a good LB corps and some depth... In other words, the Cowboys are in good shape with regard to the 12 meat and potatoes positions (the OL and the defensive front seven). Add the TE position to that, if you want.

Dallas probably could use one more home run hitter. The impact of Owens' loss is evidence. Besides, both Owens and Glenn are well north of 30.

I also recall when the Cowboys added Tony Dorsett to what was already a good offense. They traded up for some sizzle, and that worked out pretty well.

I doubt that a trade for McFadden is in the cards, as the price would be too high. But I look for Jones to try to find an impact offensive player, and if he doesn't think his draft positioning will allow him to get that done, he might look to make a trade or sign a free agent.

It should be fun, if nothing else.

Funny... hardly anyone seems to recognize the origin. But a high school friend of mine and I got in touch a year or so ago after not having spoken or corresponded for many years. My e-mail address was shaketiller@... His was billyclydepuckett@... A few of us are Dan Jenkins fans.

Thanks for the nice comments. My job requires me to be on the road much of the time, and when I'm here in the office, I'm usually pretty snowed with work. But I enjoy reading this board nearly every day. It's the best source for Cowboys news and opinions, without question. At one time, I think I could have convinced you folks that I knew as much about the team as most anyone. These days, I have to fight to keep up.
