I've always loved Monday Night Football. Seeing Emmitt run to daylight on one of the first plays of the season in '95, Deion dancing for a TD on a punt return against NY circa '98, etc....it just had a special something to it.
Part of it, to me, was getting that seal of approval from the broadcasters. Hearing Madden gush over Quincy on that final drive against NY. Hearing the same for Julius against Seattle a few years ago. The Michaels-Gifford-Dierdorf era did the same for me (too young to have been around for Cossel).
But listening to this broadcast, I could honestly care less what is said. You just don't expect to get anything meaningful out of it. Tirico is solid and easy to listen to, but the other two are horrible.
To me, Kornheiser makes sports journalists look bad with his constant and silly questions thrown at Thesiman. "Why do quarterbacks wear gloves, Joe?"; "That's Urlacher rushing up the middle, right Joe?". I don't know if he's been asked to do this to make Theisman look smart or if he sees it as his way to be involved in the discussions. But it comes across as if he's unprepared and generally not very knowledgable of the game.
If you're just trying to get interaction, ask a more detailed question ... something like "Describe how it helps you throw the football, Joe?" At least it softens the stupidity.
I dunno, in his current state Kornheiser often makes comments I'd expect of Dennis Miller, but not someone with his respected resume as a sports journalist. You know the game, Tony. Stop acting like you don't just to set up Theisman to look like the smart guy he's not.
Theisman makes the ocasional comment I agree with, but he's the master of throwing stuff at the wall -- as this thread points out. Pointing out Theisman's contradictions is the one thing Kornheiser's good at.
