He cant cover TE's and were not going to put our best pass rusher Ware in coverage all the time, because hes the best pass rusher in the NFL. I would honestly rather resign Spence a guy who can do a little of both or draft an OLB in the second or third round. Not to mention, its not like our safeties are great in coverage. We cant be like the Steelers and rush all the time because we dont have a safety like Troy. I just dont like the idea of spending huge money on a guy whose too small for 3-4 DE and he would be a huge liability in coverage.

I only want him if a change to the 4-3 is made .

Not sure he's too small to play any position.

He's a monster.

Does anyone really believe the cowboys will sign Mario Williams.
Houston will get him signed.

The only way Mario is still a Texan next season is if they choose to use the franchise tag on him (which would mean paying him $20 mil plus). Not happening, imo.

It all depends on what the contract parameters are.

If we had not foolishly extended Rat we probably would have had the ammunition to go after Mario Williams. It would be difficult to allocate that much money to the front 7 and pay out 3 All-Pro contracts.

If we do sign him our best strategy would be to put him at DE in the 3-4 and find a big NT. Then you have Rat, NT and Mario on the line with Ware, Carter, Lee and draft pick at LB. That is a very athletic front 7 with major pass rush ability.

If Mario leaves Houston, he'll most likely end up back in a 4-3 D

By 2014 the cap will start jumping at a rate of probably close to $10 million a year. So all we have to do is slide by the next two years at most.

Even if it is true, the contracts will go up with it.

It'll likely all wash out.

New contracts will. But old contracts won't. I think what the OP was saying was that if we can get guys signed this year and deal with it for the next two, there's going to be some breathing room after that.

Is Mario Williams all that great? There were a lot of fans around here that were very disappointed in him. It's only been in the last couple of years that he's really started to produce. I wouldn't sign him period. Reminds me of another one of these guys that plays hard in his contract year (Newman anyone?) and slacks-off the rest of the time. No thanks...

Point taken.

But Newman is a terrible reference.

Great job comparing one of the best players at his position to one of the worst.

would rather sign a good NT and another DE for a lot less and move Rat to end

really good coaches can take a very talented player and make use of him very well.

I wasn't aware there was a great shot that we'd be signing Mario Williams.

Now believe me I wouldn't be upset about it at all but I don't see it happening.

And how in the world does anyone know if he can or can't cover something? He only played in like 5 games this year. Hard to say what he could or couldn't do.

FACTS: (which have been missed by several in this thread)

1- Mario Williams is only a 4-3 DE. He's not a 3-4 End (reducing his strength), he's not a 3-4 backer (too big, he'd rush every play- losing the advantage of the 3-4). Period.
2- Cowboys only sign him if they are switching to a 4-3, which is very possible. Ryan has more history with it, the cowboys have several players very capable (Ratliff, Lee, Carter, Ware can fit in either system).
3- Mario Williams is one of the best DE's in football.
4- The Texans have less than 2 million in cap space. It will take a miracle for them to sign Williams (and Myers- who I bet the cowboys have serious interest in- more than Nicks)
5- The cowboys will have over 20 million in cap space after cutting Newman. They can sign this guy if they want to.

Not saying they will, but to say they can't or he isn't that good is just silly. Nicks at 9 million per, or Williams at 10 mil per? I know where I'd rather the money spent - particularly given there isn't a star Pass rusher available at 14, but Stanford G DeCastro probably will be (rated as a top 3 overall player by Wes Bunting).
