Portis claims Browns knew Commanders' plays; but how?

By RYAN O'HALLORAN

Daily Press (Newport News, Va.).

CLEVELAND - Moments after the Commanders' 17-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, running back Clinton Portis said he knew one of the reasons for the team's season-long offensive inefficiency.

"Anytime a defensive player comes up to you after the game and tells you they knew the plays, it's hard to beat anybody," Portis said. "How does the defense know the play we're running? I have no idea. One of their guys (linebacker Andra Davis) was calling out the play and it was like running into a brick wall."

The Commanders rushed for a season-low 73 yards, but Portis' claims were met with skepticism in the Commanders' locker room.

Left tackle Chris Samuels: "(Davis) was calling some plays out early in the game but on that particular drive, we went out and got a field goal so I don't think it affected us too much."

Right tackle Ray Brown: "I didn't sense that. During a course of the game, a defense is going to pick up some tendencies."

The Browns' defense - which entered ranked 25th in the NFL - certainly played like a team who had a good idea of what was being called. After giving up an average of 361.7 yards in a 1-2 start, the Browns allowed 265 to the Commanders.

Portis was limited to 58 yards on 20 carries. He scored a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter. More concerning for the Commanders, though, is Portis' fumbles. He fumbled on the opening play of the second half - his third lost fumble in two games - and the Browns scored the tying touchdown four plays later. Portis lost two fumbles in a 20-14 loss to the New York Giants Sept. 19.

"We got three losses and in two of them, I've basically stunk it up," Portis said. "I take the blame for this loss. I put us in the position we were in and that's not what I was brought here for. I was brought here to play better and I have to find a way to play better."

I will give Portis some credit for taking the loss upon himself.

I don't really consider this crying personally. They played terrible, but I don't think it should be considered whining...

Portis would have had a better day if he was able to run to the right side behind Jon Jansen instead of Ray Brown. Jansen is known for his pass-protection ability, but his run-blocking skills are solid as well. He has great upper-body strength with which he can push back DE's, good enough agility that he can quickly bounce back up after falling down, and good mobility with which he can run a few yards downfield to make pre-emptive blocks. Ray Brown had those qualities ten years ago.

The thing is, I spent all offseason telling Skins fans their offense was gonna struggle, because while they were signing every expensive, "name" free agent they could get their hands on, they had ignored the offensive line... I said the Skins were too small up the middle, and that they were razor-thin on the OL, so they'd find it difficult to deal with just about any injury...

Well, I think watching Greg Ellis abuse Ray Brown last week showed most Skins fans that yes indeed, their favorite team IS in trouble at RT... they have similar problems at C... and what happens when their next injury strikes on the OL??

So far, the Skins' season is unfolding pretty much the way I expected it to... I saw them as an 8-8 team potentially, if they stayed healthy, and if they didn't, I said they might be looking at double digit losses again this season... I figured they'd be pretty stout defensively, but I figured they'd struggle moving the ball...

I ask you, does that sound like a fair analysis of the state of the Skins on Monday, October 4th, 2004??

I know what the Skins are running about 10% of the time so it shouldn't be a stretch for other teams. to. Gibbs, like Norv Turner wants to run the same stuff a lot(counter treys, up the gut runs with trapping on a DT and bootlegs seem to be that core now).

Portis isn't really that well suited to all the delays and up the middle stuff. He's a slasher and speed back. He doesn't like all the contact. The fumbles seem to indicate he can't handle this type of workload.

Shanahan isn't a genius coach but where running backs and running games are concerned he is about as close as it gets.

I wonder what Wash's record would be with Bailey at RCB and Garrison Hearst or Duce Staley in the backfield?

Home run threat RBs are great if your passing game can consistently get first downs but they are not good in ball control offenses.

Tell the truth..Your not really a woman are you! :D

Is film study regarded as cheating now?

I thought Gibbs was supposed to be the genius play caller? The genius was figured out by Dave Campo.

Portis takes the blame on himself while at the same time getting in a dig at the coaching, the blocking schemes, the play calling, the QB whose piddly arm strength supposedly leads to 8 or 9 in the box.. Suerey he can't believe the Browns got ahold of the playbook. Anyone could have forecast those plays.

Get your head in the playbook, Clinton, and tell your team mates to do likewise..perhaps Gibbs can use more motion next week if you all know what to do on the basic plays he's reduced to calling, and which you still can't execute all that well.

And yeah, try holding onto the rock.

It can get worse, ay some point during the year they will blame a loss on Clinton Portis tripping over an acorn.

I'm done with them for awhile.

Now the Jints are another story.

And ultimately Philadelphia. That's the only rival really worth the ongoing effort.
