Things I Have Learned

1. Football is the ultimate team game...unless Tony Romo is your QB. Then, no matter what, it's his fault.

Might as well start here.

I do wish everyone could calm down though. Admittedly, I sometimes think Romo is cursed or fated for heartbreak. The guy has had about 6 bad plays all year, and they always seem to cost him and his team the game. Perhaps that speaks to how much is put on him? Regardless, I am amazed at the lack of perspective from fans.

No matter what happens, football is a team sport. Turnovers will hurt the whole team faster than anything. So will a defense that allows an opponent to score the first four times they touch the ball in the fourth quarter! So will a receiver not knowing where to line up or what route to run. So will letting a DB cross your face on a slant.

The QB has more to do with the outcome of a game than any other player, usually. But it's not all on him. There are 22 people on a football field wearing jerseys every play.

2. Emotion trumps logic every time.

If I would have asked a lot of Cowboy fans about the Lions game before it happened and told them that Dallas would lose 34-30, I think most would have nodded their head with understanding. The Lions have a lot of young talent, and the Cowboys are awfully beat up. They might have even been impressed that Dallas could score 30 with the young offensive line going against the front.

No one feels that way today, of course. Today, everyone wants blood because of how it happened. Funny thing is how many fan bases feel that way week after week though. Which leads to...

3. Leads are not as safe as they used to be.

Teams throw the ball and gobble up yardage faster than ever before. Aerial strikes from offenses and rules designed to increase scoring have made protecting leads harder than ever. I keep hearing about "historic" collapses. I don't think they are going to be historic for much longer. The Cowboys have blown a game. Before that, the 49ers did against our the Cowboys. The Patriots did it. The Bills and Lions are making a habit of coming back. And then it will be those teams who lose a game that way. It's the nature of the beast.

4. There is no excuse for not winning.

I think this is one of the biggest problems among fans. Every time you try to talk reasonably about the game, they think you are just making excuses for the player or coach, etc that you like.

That's not the case at all. There were some coaching decisions I didn't like. There were plays all over the field I didn't like.

The thing is, winning a game in the NFL is really hard. We have trained ourselves to believe that skill is always the determining factor, but even that isn't true. A game may swing on a call that is made or isn't. It may swing on a funny bounce of the ball or any number of other little things that go on during the course of a game.

Obviously, every team is working hard to do all of those things right to put themselves in position to win. When they fail, they work harder and try to do better next team. But winning is hard.

5. Talking too much trash usually back to bite you.

Yes, this is about Rob Ryan. It's also about a lot of fans though. We have people here that will talk smack and tell everyone how the Cowboys are going to win and how much they will win by, and they are usually the same ones with torches when it doesn't happen. Don't blame the team for letting you down. Just don't talk so much.

And, it certainly doesn't help when the QB of your team makes bad decisions, spots a struggling team 14pts and let's them gain momentum off of them.

Yes, it is a team game, and a team loss.

But, more and more, the finger is getting pointed at this Cowboys QB for the losses because of his decision making.

Agreed...

Another pro-Tony thread to add to the growing list. Not even remotely stealthy, either. That takes balls. BTW, were you pushing the "team" angle when everyone was crediting Tony with winning the Frisco game almost single-handedly? I'm guessing that's a "no."

You probably could have expressed actual analysis to try and combat all the sniping and sarcasm that's already running rampent, I think you would have been better served doing so.

here is the one thing you are right about. Historic comebacks are going to be the norm in todays NFL. We have had TWO against us in 4 weeks. Maybe it won't happen again this year...but we will give up a 14 point lead in the 4th quarter at least once a year on an annual basis. And so will a lot of other teams.

Things I have learned: certain fans will go to great lengths to immunize Tony from any and all criticism. Some [strike]animals[/strike] players are more equal than others.

Brady and the pats had a very similar game last week vs the bills and he didnt get half as crucified as romo has . yeah i know he earned the right but in this day and age of what have you done for me latley ;)

to quote the playmaker with the same intensity.

Agree with this 100%. Minus the turnovers, the Cowboys still played well enough to win.

Can you please stop worrying about Brady, and focus on our team? You already know why he doesn't get crucified as harshly as Romo, so please stop playing dumb.

Some Cowboys fans on this forum are seriously delusional.

Something I've learned.

The Lions have a troll named BillySims.

I think the frustration is really setting in for us fans. This team has the talent to go deep into the playoffs. They look amazing at times, playing good defense, high powered offense, etc. But, when our mistakes happen, they are nuclear bomb mistakes.

This team will only go as far as Romo takes them and there is no other option at QB. Hopefully they learned how to manage a game better when its late and with the lead, only time will tell. There was too much time to run the ball 80% of the time when we had a 24 pt lead, but the situational play calling was suspect.

Hopefully in the off-seasoon, Garret hires an OC which will also give him some added job security because if we see a couple more of these type losses, Jerry will take notice and he is on the hot seat.

Even though Romo has left a sour taste in my mouth, I will still support him and the Dallas Cowboys 100%.

You mean after what 5 years as a starting QB he still needs to learn how to protect the Football

Meaning that it is the coaches job to help insure/instill that.
