1. Football is the ultimate team game...unless Tony Romo is your QB. Then, no matter what, it's his fault.
Might as well start here.
I do wish everyone could calm down though. Admittedly, I sometimes think Romo is cursed or fated for heartbreak. The guy has had about 6 bad plays all year, and they always seem to cost him and his team the game. Perhaps that speaks to how much is put on him? Regardless, I am amazed at the lack of perspective from fans.
No matter what happens, football is a team sport. Turnovers will hurt the whole team faster than anything. So will a defense that allows an opponent to score the first four times they touch the ball in the fourth quarter! So will a receiver not knowing where to line up or what route to run. So will letting a DB cross your face on a slant.
The QB has more to do with the outcome of a game than any other player, usually. But it's not all on him. There are 22 people on a football field wearing jerseys every play.
2. Emotion trumps logic every time.
If I would have asked a lot of Cowboy fans about the Lions game before it happened and told them that Dallas would lose 34-30, I think most would have nodded their head with understanding. The Lions have a lot of young talent, and the Cowboys are awfully beat up. They might have even been impressed that Dallas could score 30 with the young offensive line going against the front.
No one feels that way today, of course. Today, everyone wants blood because of how it happened. Funny thing is how many fan bases feel that way week after week though. Which leads to...
3. Leads are not as safe as they used to be.
Teams throw the ball and gobble up yardage faster than ever before. Aerial strikes from offenses and rules designed to increase scoring have made protecting leads harder than ever. I keep hearing about "historic" collapses. I don't think they are going to be historic for much longer. The Cowboys have blown a game. Before that, the 49ers did against our the Cowboys. The Patriots did it. The Bills and Lions are making a habit of coming back. And then it will be those teams who lose a game that way. It's the nature of the beast.
4. There is no excuse for not winning.
I think this is one of the biggest problems among fans. Every time you try to talk reasonably about the game, they think you are just making excuses for the player or coach, etc that you like.
That's not the case at all. There were some coaching decisions I didn't like. There were plays all over the field I didn't like.
The thing is, winning a game in the NFL is really hard. We have trained ourselves to believe that skill is always the determining factor, but even that isn't true. A game may swing on a call that is made or isn't. It may swing on a funny bounce of the ball or any number of other little things that go on during the course of a game.
Obviously, every team is working hard to do all of those things right to put themselves in position to win. When they fail, they work harder and try to do better next team. But winning is hard.
5. Talking too much trash usually back to bite you.
Yes, this is about Rob Ryan. It's also about a lot of fans though. We have people here that will talk smack and tell everyone how the Cowboys are going to win and how much they will win by, and they are usually the same ones with torches when it doesn't happen. Don't blame the team for letting you down. Just don't talk so much.
