Just rewatched the game:

Things I liked:
  • First drive of the game was our most balanced. Good mix of run and pass, took almost 6 mins off the clock.
  • You could clearly see that Manning was grinding to get out on the field during that 6 min opening drive. Dude clearly looked annoyed, like a really hyper kid who didn't get his way.
  • The first quarter. 12 mins for us, 2 for them.
  • The 3rd down play where Romo is ducking and scrambling and finds Witten on a 12 yarder. Romo magic. But what made me laugh on that play...as Romo ducks and then starts darting back up field you clearly see Waters throw his arms up like he's going to block Romo's pass or something. It just looked funny as hell, like he was a monster or something.
  • Seam routes to Escobar, great hands and it was the first time I really noticed how big his hands are.
  • Williams shield the defender and then sprinting away on his bomb TD. Great pass too.
  • I thought the FG just before half time was huge.
  • Holloman smoking Holliday on a kick off return.
  • Thought we did a good job on Welker and D. Thomas.
  • Romo clearly had some extra on his passes, really put his body into it, was straight dealing and completely engaged in the game.
  • Obviously no one like the result, but I truly enjoyed this game. A track meet, a shoot out, whatever, it was an instant classic. My mom texted me in the 3rd qtr, who ever has the ball last wins... it was true.
Things I didn't like:

  • The emptiness I still have today. Tough loss to take.
  • The Dez fumble was killer I thought. It looked like he just didn't have the ball positioned how he wanted it after the catch.
  • The amount of penalties missed, Hatcher helmet flying off, same for Ware in the 1st half...no hands to the face penalty? Hatcher tackled to the ground a few times. The clear intentional grounding on Manning no call. The Witten out of the endzone no call. On the long Dez pass late in the game where he catches and runs for 40 yards or so...Romo gets crushed a good second or two after he gets the ball off. No call. The refs didn't cost us the game but a lot of crap was missed. The botched play/game clock issue just before the 2 min warning.
  • On the Williams catch before the FG at the end of the first half, he did not get out of bounds right away. I was screaming at the tv. I thought it cost us a crack at the endzone. Would have been enough time to get a throw off and still kick a FG.
  • The Decker back shoulder TD in the first half...I didn't like it because how is Mo supposed to cover that? Mo was all over him, its crazy how that throw is almost indefensible.
  • THE DEFENSE - 51 on your home turf? Denver had the ball 11 times. 9 of them scores, 2 turnovers. You can't get one non scoring stop? Never mind bend don't break...it's turnover or touchdown with these guys.
  • Not letting Denver score at the end so we could get the ball back. Denver admitted later, they were thinking the same on the drive prior to the pick.
  • The runs we gave up to Moreno. The ends seems to rush right up the field and they used the delayed draw perfectly on us.
  • And the obvious...the interception. Not going to get into it, plenty of threads have taken care of that and at the end of the day it's a no win situation for EVERYBODY.
Thoughts rolling around in my head:
  • Let them score....we screwed up. Everyone is talking about the Moreno run for first down but not touchdown. The play we should have let them score on was before that. The Julius Thomas catch in the flat. Thomas probably could have got in, but Wilcox contested him and got him out of bounds. GRRRRRRRR WHY!!!???
  • A lot of people wanted us to run the ball that last drive, the whole hindsight 20/20 thing. I had absolutely no problem with us coming out with Romo firing. Could we have surprised Denver with a draw on the first play? Maybe. But like a hot goaltender in the playoffs I'm riding the hot hand that got you there. No issue with Romo throwing.
  • Ok I'm going to get into it. The interception. Everyone is to blame. Romo, Escobar, Smith, Garrett, the defense, etc.
  • What I'm tired of is this. Romo is a great talent. I do not want to live through what we had between Aikman and Romo ever again. However, I have these thoughts stuck in my head. Has Romo brought us back to win in the 4th qtr? Yes, over 10 times, not sure of the exact number. But has Romo been unclutch in the most important of games? Yes. If you know this going in then why hasn't the following happened? Why isn't Demarco Murray pulled aside and told "its on your shoulders, we're going to give it you and you're going to take us there" or "Sean Lee, it's on you, go get me the ball" or "Dware, strip sack, I need you." If we know Tony is unclutch why isn't someone else tapped on the shoulder and told to go get some?
  • To answer my question above...are the guys I listed even more unclutch than Tony? and that's why we continue ride his arm?
  • Many people say Tony's legacy is that of a choker. Is that legacy half the size if the team had another way to win games other than his shoulder?
  • 500 plus pass yards and 5 TDs and you lose...that makes me sick and I'm definitely looking at everywhere but the QB position with a you know what look on my face.
  • The best teams in this league can win in multiple ways. Seattle can beat you with Wilsons arm or with Lynch running game or a shutdown defense. Right now our only option is Romo's arm. If we know he's unclutch why haven't we developed another portion of our team to win games? Save the GM/owner stuff I've read it all before and don't really care. My thought is more of a statement than looking for an answer/solution.
  • We do not have garbage athletes on defense. The scheme I wonder about. We seemed to have improved the offensive trenches. Definitely need to invest in the dline trenches next.

Manning:
  • He is a smarter QB because he threw his pick in the 3rd qtr instead of in the last two mins. There is no sarcasm font available so read that sarcastically. I typed it out of spite. I'm bitter so what.
  • Rushing Manning is almost a complete waste of time. He gets the ball out of his hands so quick because of his robotic understanding of where he is going with the ball. He throws to a spot, the WR's are programmed to be there at the right moment, assembly line style. Machine, machine, machine.
  • I think the only thing could really throw Manning off is to get completely unorthodox defensively. Do something that looks funny to his eyes and makes him go "huh?" for a split second. I keep thinking about the muddle huddle Ryan used in Cleveland on Brady or Brees (can't remember what game) but it messed them up. Or how about rush 2, a spy on the RB and drop everyone else in coverage. 8 guys in coverage, double everyone. Make Manning run. I sure has hell don't think he or the Broncos coaching staff want that. Listen, dude is going to score on you...he's just going to, period. Why not do anything possible to make him "blink" and go "what the...." At the very least it would be fun to watch.
The NFC:
  • There is a lot of What the U Know What going on in the league right now. Fans of the Giants, Skins, Falcons, Bucs, Steelers (AFC, yeah I know, hate them though) and Vikings are all saying what the u know what. The Packers aren't exactly stellar and the Niners have issues. Seattle and New Orleans stand alone at the moment really.
We're 2-3, a disgusting divisional year by NFC East standards and here we are in the mix.
Maybe we're playing our typical December games in September/October and we get hot in December.
Deadskins Sunday night. We have the 2nd biggest scoreboard in the league and Dexter Manley still wouldn't be able to read the AT&T logo on it.

Wanted to comment on this one. I was screaming at the tv too, but in retrospect, I'm pretty sure he did the right thing. Williams catches the ball with 19 seconds left at around the 42 yard line. If he steps out right there, that would be a 60-yard FG. That means no shot at the end zone: we have to run a play or two to gain 10 yards to put us in FG range. And even achieving that is no guarantee. His run down the sideline gained the 13 yards we needed and it took a great defensive play to keep him from getting OOB at the end of it. He made the right decision.

I agree with your post after watching again. My initial on the play reaction was what it was and was wrong. Rewatching can be informative.

Have you read the Romo thread by hairic? You can blame several things for the interception but Romo ain't one of them. Good read. Good throw.

Oh yeah, I wanted to comment on this too (by the way, loved your post for the most part).

I'm still torn on the "let them score" thing. I agree with you that on the 3rd down play, the best move is to try to hold them and force the field goal. I also agree that on the 1st and 2nd down plays, they should have been prepared to let them score. But on that second down play, when the opportunity arose to get the guy out of bounds and stop the clock short of the 1st down, well, you have to take that. That was huge. Saves a time out and with just one more stop, forces the field goal. The difference between having to drive down for a TD and only needing a field goal is absolutely immense and well worth taking the chance of the third down play. If he was going to stay in bounds or if he was going to get the 1st down, by all means, do your best matador impression and let him on by. Push him into the end zone, even. But getting him out of bounds shy of the 1st? That really was the best possible outcome on that particular play.
