Things They Don't Tell You On ESPN: Tony Romo Rocks December

20131128_mje_se2_073.0_standard_709.0.jpg

Contrary to public opinion, Tony Romo's December performance has been outstanding over the last few years. As the Cowboys battle for the division title this December, the question really is about whether the rest of the Cowboys can play up to Romo's standards down the stretch.

In the middle of the fourth quarter of the game against the Raiders, prompted by the cover shot of the latest Sports Illustrated issue, announcer Phil Simms let loose with a valiant defense of Tony Romo.
You can't deny what you see on the football field all the time: his outstanding play and really, his ability. We talked to Tony Romo about why so many people are on him and why he's constantly criticized, and he goes: "Look, I understand it. Until I win the Super Bowl, I'm always going to have those questions and criticisms."

But you know, Jim, to make the story bigger, we embellish too much. The media - and we're part of it - everybody's playoff record comes out there. Well, Tony Romo has a new category I've never heard [applied to] any other quarterback but him: Elimination games. Because they want to make it more, make it look worse.

Elimination games? What are those?! Let's make up a new stat so you can make it look worse!

Well, now that Simms has cleaned up with elimination games, let's look at another persistent storyline that is often used when there is a need to write something about the Cowboys: The December Swoon.

If you're a Cowboys fan, you're very familiar with that particular storyline. As soon as the calendar turns to December, everybody starts talking about how the Cowboys are about to collapse. More specifically, how the Cowboys' high profile quarterback is expected to collapse come December. By now, you'll know that Tony Romo owns November but has struggled in December - or so you may have been led to believe.

I'm not sure if this article has been posted yet, but it's a good article regarding Romo and the month of December. This article highlights the fact that despite our terrible record in December, Romo is one of the best QBs in the month of December. Only one QB has a higher QB Rating with a minimum of 200 pass attempts, and that's Aaron Rodgers. We may have a collapse in December, but chances our it won't be because of our QB's play.

Tony Romo is one of my favorite current Cowboys. He's tough as nails (both mentally and physically) and I seriously wish that he would win a SB before he retires.

Getting to the playoffs this year and winning once or twice will help his legacy a bit. If this team can make it to the divisional round and play a competitive game, win or lose, I'll be much more optimistic about next year and what this team might do.

As crappy as the defense has been Tony needs to get a lot of credit.

I dont really put much stock in those type of stats, especailly when it comes to Romo. He is the same guy no matter the month, time, stadium. Doesnt matter if its a blowout or clutch time. Romo is a very good QB through and through. Those stats are just incidental (or is the word coincidental?) and thats about it.

I would say this would shock most football fans. I'd really like to see the team take advantage of the good QB play! I didn't realize Dec was such a good month for him.

Tony, like every QB to ever play the game will be viewed insomuch as their playoff and SB records can take them...having a lot of stats is fine as long as it translates to the post-season...in my book, he is a HOF player for the cowboys, at least a ring of honor guy...but, in reality, since he has yet to win anything, he will never be considered for the Hall or the Ring....still lots of time to fill his bucket list before he throws his last pass

I will be there for you Tony until you play your last down

That win and go home game is the dumbest statistic ever made by a commentator. Whoever originally coined that phrase should be slapped.
Doesn't Manning have like 8 1 and dones?

Some posters here love it tho. They get a chill up their leg every time they can bring it up to bash the QB of the team they root for, and to elevate division rival QB's to some fantasy level in their lil minds.

You are correct tho, it is a pretty stupid "stat."

I think his December record sucks because the team is usually heavily injured by december

You make a very valid point. This team is always dealing with injuries. But it also has a lot to do with our depth. Hopefully that changes this year. We've been injured all year and are use to it at least this year. We just need a healthy Lee and no other set backs and I think we will be fine.

That rep for Tony and the boys came prior to '09. I remember Troy pointing out that Dallas' schedule had toughened up in December during '08 compared to November. Flip the schedule, he asserted, and you likely flip the nov/dec records.

These stats have plenty of stock when it comes to shutting up people that would have you think he throws a ton of int's (Has one of the best TD/INT ratio's ever). Sucks in December (Has been oustanding the last few years) Yeah but what about the 4th quarter! Oh yeah highest rating ever... I will tell you it might be more of a pain in the neck when you are not a local Dallas fan and you have to live around Giant and Eagirl fans every day!
