https://www.dawgsbynature.com/2024/3/25/24110988/nfl-hip-drop-tackle-rule-nfl-dangerous-or-necessaryI don’t think the hip drop is a new thing, we just see it more often in the modern game because offenses are so spread out and design plays to get guys the ball in space. This is when the majority of these tackles happen, typically a LB or DB making a play on a ball carrier in the open field from an angle.
Back when the game was played more north/south and CBs could play tough man coverage there wasn’t as much a need for these tackles
2002 was 22 years ago, so no it isn't a 'new' thing. But this is from the link I posted:
"Where did this method originate?
This type of tackle was invented in 2002 by the Melbourne (Australia) Storm rugby team, members of the National Rugby League. As tackling techniques became more restricted in rugby, especially with the use of the head (and helmet in American Football), this type of tackle began to become popular. It was conceived to eliminate leading with the head. The act of the tackle basically renders the ball carrier defenseless. They aren’t able to detach from the defender or kick their way out which creates the concern and where most of the injuries occur because the ankle gets trapped underneath the weight of the defensive player as they both fall to the turf."
Essentially, it became a thing in the NFL in 2005 when the Horse collar technique was banned.
