Miles Austin dropped two touchdown passes and Romo could have easily run for another (or at least a first down in the red zone) but decided to try to force it to Witten, which led to the missed FG. Austin was also open for another TD but BJ badly underthrew it. We probably also should have tried the 54 yard FG before the half-no guarantees Folk makes it, but the percentages were better than a hail mary (bad coaching there). What I am trying to say is as bad as we played, we still could have won that game.
Having said that, we have played badly the last month. Only the most religiously biased would deny that. That is not to say we can't get it turned around in two weeks, but it is not going to be easy to win our first playoff game in however many years, especially if TO can't go. We all know that HF advantage is marginal for this team (witness 1998 home playoff loss-almost shut-out).
The problem with yesterday's game was not that we lost, but that we played so poorly. Its as if the team listened more to the media--who went on about how it was a meaningless game for them--rather than the coaching staff (I doubt the coaches told them this was a meaningless game).
Here is a partial list of things we can glean from this game (as well as the last month):
Positives:
Ware is a beast
Spears is playing better
Tank did a decent job playing most of the game
Bowen is a nice find
Witten is great
Negatives:
Our offense seems predicated on TO's presence on the field to do anything
Glenn and Romo are clearly not on the same page
We almost lost Glenn as soon as we got him back
Crayton is not a very good punt returner
Reeves has gotten burnt so bad the last 2 weeks, he is still smoldering
Romo is just off. He is making bad decisions and forcing it to Witten.
The coaching staff seems to be having a hard time figuring out what's wrong.
We definetly need an upgrade at the number 2 receiver, especially if Glenn isn't coming back and probably even if Glenn comes back.
We can't get teams off the field on 3rd and long. It doesn't matter how long it is teams are converting, might as well skip 1st and 2nd down.
Bottom line is there are a lot of problems heading into the playoffs. We are not playing our best ball and that is not how you want to go in. I am not predicting doom just yet, but the coaching staff has a tough job ahead to try to get this turned around over the next two weeks. Things are not fine.
