It turns out the Giants aren’t as short-handed at safety as we thought.
First of all, the Giants are very high on Sha’reff Rashad, the undrafted free agent out of Central Florida who had a terrific rookie camp.
“(He’s a) very bright-eyed kid who could pick the stuff up,” defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan said. “He wasn’t overwhelmed by any of it mentally. He’s an athlete. He looks like he’ll be more than ambitious in run-support. He’s a good cover guy. He can play the deep ball and that kind of stuff. He had a nice camp.”
“He did well,” added safeties coach Dave Merritt. “Coming in here the kid was known to have a high test score and he proved that. He was able to make all the coverage calls and adjustments, and not only make them but he did it with conviction.”
Also, according to safeties coach Dave Merritt, first-year pro Travonti Johnson is converting from cornerback to safety. And Vince Anderson, a corner out of Webber International, might convert to safety, too.
“Because he’s so big and so tall,” Sheridan said of the 6-2, 205-pounder. “Because we have so many corners it’s going to be challenging for him through the preseason to make the final roster (at corner). But he looks like a safety (and) I think he has played some of that.”
