Over at SB Nation they have someone doing a "This day in wrestling" article...

Here's the one from Sept 10th:

Here's a snippet:

36 years ago today in Ohtsu, Japan, Harley Race defeats Giant Baba to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the fifth time.

28 years ago today in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, NWA United States Tag Team Champions The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane) defeated Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard of the Four Horsemen to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship for the first, and surprisingly, only time.

The win for the Midnight Express made them the first duo to hold both the NWA United States and World Tag Team Championships simultaneously.

The interesting thing about Harley Race winning the NWA World Heavyweight title is that he had dropped the belt to Baba only a few days before and was done through "gentleman's agreement". Race lost to Baba as a favor to him in order to help push Baba's wrestling group in Japan. It was totally unsanctioned by the NWA board of directors. Unfortunately it was part of a string of "week-long champions" like Dusty Rhodes and Tommy Wildfire Rich who were made short-term champions as a "favor" to someone... Usually the booker for one of the territories.

Many thought it degraded the championship.

That Midnight Express match made them faces. That match against Flair and Windham was a great match also.

35 years ago today in Kansas City, Missouri, Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the first time.

Flair would go on to win the “ten pounds of gold” ten times (only nine of them are officially recognized; Flair’s title win over Harley Race in Singapore in 1983 is not recognized by NWA or WWE) through 1993 when WCW officially split from NWA.

Flair was also the only man to hold the NWA and WCW world heavyweight championships simultaneously; he did so in 1991 when WCW first established its own championships. He infamously left WCW in July 1991 as both the WCW and NWA world champion. Flair was stripped of the WCW title almost immediately; he would hold the NWA crown until making his WWF debut in September.
