I was watching the television as the attendant swept the evening's junk from the rec room.
The talking heds were raphsodizing about how bad our defense was. Well, yes.
And they kept talking about Kiffin vs. Fat Boy Ryan.
As if they did not know about the diaspora of injured defensive Cowboys.
As if they did not know about the malingers/slackers by the names of Spencer and Ratliff.
As if they did not know about Ware sputtering for most of the season.
But our defense, until last night, has acquitted itself well as far as dedication, hustle and a willingness to overachieve.
However, and thus, last night's opponent showed us how terrible our defense really is.
Kiffen does not need the tsunami of criticism that is coming his way. Neither does Martinelli. Or Jason. Or Jerra, who I half to say, put his money where his mouf is and tried to get us a decent secondar. It just didn't work out.
It would be a salve to me if we focused on the bad things that happened to our defense instead of how bad it is. Kiffen never envisioned this. Neither did I.
All things considered he has done a caretaker's job of holding the defense together and not letting hisself feel sorry for himself. He just does his work. And his over-their-heads defense does its work. And people like Heath, et al. are husting but showing how vulnerable we is.
I'm still with you, Kiffie. Many will say you are not a right fit.
I say you are the right fit but have not had the chance to field a credible team.
I am proud of you, Kiffie, and your pack of well-meaning but ineffectual players who stick out their necks. I am proud of you fill-ins who do your best.
You are better than peoples named Spencer and Ratliff because at least you try.
