This defense will never be good until they improve defensive drafting

Draft Byron Jones over Landon Collins.

Draft Jaylon Smith over Myles Jack.

Draft Taco Charlton over Reuben Foster or TJ Watt.

Draft Morris Claiborne over Brockers/Wagner.

Draft Josh Thomas over Richard Sherman.

See a trend? They are continually allowing superior defensive players to pass them on the draft board. Yet I keep hearing about how drafting has improved under Garrett. Pls...

Until this problem in the scouting dept is addressed, we'll always be a bum *** one-sided team. Sad, that Jerry can't throw money at this issue, considering there are no caps on coaching staffs.

Sorry, but Byron has been better than Landon Collins this year.

Myles Jack doesn't even play the MIKE or the SAM.

Rueben Foster can't get on the field and is a head case.

Wagner was drafted in the 2nd round. And Richard Sherman was a 4th round pick who was a former WR at Stanford.

This defense has a massive issue...it stinks without Sean Lee. The problem we had today (and this year) is that Jaylon, once again, stunk up the joint with Lee out...moving Hitchens to the WILL. To me, I'm starting to think that Jaylon just isn't a MIKE linebacker. He can't read the plays and doesn't really understand how to handle contact at the position. He'll try to blow up the blocker when he needs to shoot the gap and shoot the gap when he needs to blow up the blocker or shoot the wrong gap or get abused by an O-Linemen. Unfortunately, this scheme requires that from the MIKE.

We really need to find a veteran MIKE next year in case Hitchens or Lee gets hurt and Jaylon doesn't make major strides. And good lord, why do we keep Mike 'Moon Over My-Hammy' Woicik around?

Could they draft better? Sure. Every team has misses like these, although it feels like we have a lot.

What bothers me is the self-evaluation of this defense going into the season. There are some serious deficiencies on defense and the team just seems to ignore them.

I would hope that the Anthony Brown apologists would step up and admit he's a problem. Playing Maliek Collins at 1Tech is a problem. Jaylon Smith is either too slow to his gaps or is missing his assignments. Byron Jones seems out of position way too often. Jeff Heath is a nothing out there. This team needs a true 1Tech. a true free safety, a playmaking linebacker and legit #1 CB. The rest is there but the FO can't keep pretending these glaring holes can be filled with (less than) JAG players.

Hold on a sec.

For one, are we really going to complain about missing on Sherman? He was what, a 5th round pick?

The Smith Jack thing is dumb. Smith has been awful. But has anyone paid attention to Jack? He's playing SAM LB now because he couldn't cut it at MLB or WILL. Jack would not be the answer here in Dallas. If you want to complain, they should have taken Hunter Henry at TE. Or maybe Chris Jones.

I get some of the other things, but let's not go overboard.

I watched Smith a lot today.

He either has awful instincts (which didn't seem to be a problem at ND) or he's missing assignments, because he often is in the wrong spot. One play that stuck out to me was a run up the guy for 8 yards today. Smith, if he just had not even moved, would have been standing right in the hole............. and yet he moved right for some reason and took himself out of the hole. It was perplexing.

He also seems to think he can just get around guys like he is the same kid from ND and you can't do that in the NFL. You hope that this is just a training wheels year for him and he learns but who knows how that knee is also playing in his head.

And given Lee is old and frankly, not reliable, the team needs to think long and hard about investing in LBs in FA and/or the draft.

Lol......defense was great last week....now we should've drafted Sherman.

And has been mediocre to awful at other times, including today.

You guys love to pull out these one games here or there and make it seem like that's the norm.

This defense has holes both on the field and on the sidelines. If the defense is completely reliant on one LB, that's says quite a bit about our defense and how mediocre it really is.

Well I agree. We are too reliant on Sean Lee. Too late to just realize that now. Nothing you can do about it this season.

Offense had the ball for 27 minutes, gained 233 yards, and had one scoring "drive" of 21 yards (set up by the defense). Cowboys were in the game until the stupid first down red zone pass, after running the ball to get there. Drive killed, Nugent blew the FG, no points, team deflated.

Still held the Falcons to less than 340 yards. But the offense did next to nothing today. This one wasn't on the defense.
