This draft doesn't do much for me

My general feeling is it's going to get worse on defense before it gets better. We have been terrible drafting defensive players under Jason Garrett, which is the reason we find ourselves so talent deprived on that side of the ball. We put all our eggs in the Demarcus Lawrence basket this year hoping he can be a premier rusher, I have my doubts that he can be who they think he is, I tend to view him as a nice rotational player, but I guess I'll reserve judgement until we see him develop. I hate the fact we gave up a 3 for him, just don't think his ceiling warrants it.

Martin builds upon a strength, as we have an exciting young OL going forward, so that's nice, but Guard is still one of the least valued positions in the NFL. It was a safe pick, which shouldn't be knocked, but it also doesn't do a lot to make us a better team in 2014 when we are starving for impact players on defense.

Outside of those 2 picks I think the rest of the draft looks a lot like the 2009 class, taking depth/special teams guys who you hope can find a niche to make the roster, but offer little in terms of real impact. Have to be honest and say I'm disappointed considering the depth this draft class offered.

I'm hoping we finally commit to using that OL to ground and pound teams, that's now the bread and butter of this team. I can see us masking our defense using that formula and keeping the D off the field, but I think we're still a couple drafts away from fielding a defense that I have faith in. Just not sure how realistic it is to think we can do anything of significance with the lack of talent we have on that side of the ball. Better put up 30 every week on offense and be able to play keep away.

Oh give me a break. Anyone that compares this draft to 2009 is really reaching to be negative. And I loved your silly modifier: "Outside of the TWO STARTERS we landed..."

I clearly stated outside of the first 2 picks, the rest reminds me of the 2009 draft. Those guys are probably not much more than depth/ST guys. You may get a rare gem in the 7th round but those are few and far between.

Lawrence has a ways to go before he's an everydown legit RE.

Yeah, two solid starters would give this draft a big boost over the 2009 draft.

I'm seeing a couple special teamer types on this list, but I'm seeing guys like the late round DL's and DB's who can contribute immediately to the defense. And I like the WR from Pitt. He could see some playing time on the offense.

The guys we drafted later are NOTHING like the ones we drafted in 2009. Each of the guys in 2009 was a project. Each was selected higher than expected.

Here, outside of Hitchens, we got great value out of the players we drafted, and none of the guys we drafted are "projects."

Seriously, stop being dramatic.

The biggest problem I have is that with supposedly the deepest draft in years and 11 picks (granted half of those were 7th rounders) the team came away with maybe two starters. Should have been more like 3-4. Martin is a great pick. Lawrence really needs show a lot this year. Would really suck if one 7th rounders were the second most productive players from this draft.

Time will tell. I gave it a B last night, and now I'm leaning toward B- due to giving up that 3rd rounder....dang that was bad. However, the 7th round was VERY encouraging. Could be an A three yrs. from now or a C......sure hope for the former and not the latter obviously.

No....it wouldn't 'suck' if one of the 7th rounders were the 2nd most productive players from this draft. Doesn't matter WHERE they're drafted so long as they perform. Do the Pats fans lament the fact Brady was a 6th rounder and out performed their early round picks that year? Of course not....gimme a break

If you want to believe a crop of 7th rounders is going to make a big impact than be my guest. History proves otherwise. Don't see anything "dramatic" about saying that.

So, everytime we draft guys in the 7th, you're going to compare the draft to 2009? Good to know so I can discount your draft opinions going forward.

You got your opinions and I got mine. Mine says at first glance rounds 3 and 4 leave alot to be desired. No pick in 3 and a backup up for a historically bad defense in 4. We' ll leave it at that.

I really liked our 7th rounders. I think 2 or 3 of those guys will pan out as nice players. Martin and Lawrence fit needs so they were good picks as well. Hitchens was a reach and Street is a project but overall we made good picks.

On the other hand the trade up was very risky. We overpaid and put Lawrence in a position where he must produce at a high level immediately. I'm not sure he's ready for that. I see him turning into an impact guy but not for a couple years.

Some posters wanted Lawrence in the 1st, Martin is solid as they come.

The Defense was "Wareing" out last year, Dallas improved with young players but they better have a fast learning curve.

Meanwhile the Oline may be the best in the NFL, certainly has become our biggest positive from the worst negative in one year....but you still complain.

You lost me talking about what little value an OG has in the league.

I'll never understand that mindset. This guy basically plays right in front of your QB and is responsible for protecting him. What more needs to be said?

I don't know if there is anyone that has a stronger dislike than I do when it comes to Jerry Jones....but at some point...the finger needs to be pointed at the players/coaches. In the salary cap era of the NFL...you cannot have steak at every position. We have spent 3 of the last 4 first round picks on OL...I have no problem with that approach. That should be the solid foundation to a upper tier OL...and I think it will. The skill position players on offense speak for themselves. Not the best in the NFL...but certainly good enough to give you 27 ppg

Everyone knows what we paid Brandon Carr....everyone knows what we have invested in Mo Claiborne...everyone knows what Orlando Scandrick is being paid (which is a lot for a 3rd CB). We have seen what Lee and Carter can do when they play to their potential. As far as the DL is concerned....we have Melton who most would call a stud...we drafted Lawrence...who many had a first round grade on. We still have Spencer, Selveie and Crawford. And then a bunch of effort guys. This defense requires the DL to rotate and stay fresh. Again, I cannot imagine this DL is any worse than last year. Church is a average safety. And we have to see if Wilcox...a 3rd round pick...can play to his draft status. I do believe the Seahawks have a 5th rounder (Chancellor) who is balling. So there are enough pieces on defense to be much better than last year. And had this defense just been SLIGHTLY better (around #25 as opposed to last and/or second to last.....we would have made the playoffs easily. So at some point...the players need to play and these coaches need to develop a scheme that puts them in the best position to be succesful. You can go through every roster in the NFL and find teams excelling without top 5 players at every position

Our special teams speak for themselves. Not sure what the ranking is....but I would guess they are top 10. Here is what I do know...they won us some games last year....and they did not LOSE us any games.

Are we the caliber of 49ers and Seahawks? No!. But there is enough talent on this team to contend for the NFC East title. Heck we have contended the last couple of years. And to be in contention last year...with a defense that bad....is proof that we are not far off from being the best team in the division.

This does not get Jerry off the hook for the last 20 years....but the coaches have enough resources to win 9 or 10 games. So let's see how it plays out before we decide this team will get worse before it get's better.

Having Crawford and Lee healthy again improves this defense.....IMO, Gardner will be a sleeper that will do well

No a very well thought out post. You can't judge a draft for a few years.
