When you are excited about a 7th rd pick at a position it tells you 2 things

1. The position is sorely lacking in players
2. The FO has done little in the off season to address the position

The fact that we have all these excited posts about 7th rd players with "the potential to start" is not a good thing

It shows that the defense wasn't addressed in the draft the way it should have been. I am surprised that they didn't come away with the first day one starter for the defense. Lawrence is not ready and it may take a year or two before he is ready to start if he pans out. A trade-up for Donald would have changed the conversation. Even drafting one of the top safeties would have made a difference.

I clearly stated outside of the first 2 picks, the rest reminds me of the 2009 draft. Those guys are probably not much more than depth/ST guys. You may get a rare gem in the 7th round but those are few and far between.

Lawrence has a ways to go before he's an everydown legit RE.

Of course the rest of the draft doesnt look exciting when youre evaluating the 4th to 7th rounders and looking for starters. Its possible we could end up with a few players that contribute, but its rare any team finds day one starters later in the the draft. Honestly I expect this defense to marginally better.

We put all our eggs in the Demarcus Lawrence basket this year

There are other pieces that were added other than Lawrence that will help the defense this year in addition to the returning injured players from last year.
