In 1996 Michael Irvin was charged with RAPE AND COCAINE POSSESSION, and the local fans and media were falling over themselves calling out the police and woman who accused him as liars just trying to "bring down a black man's career".

In 1998 he was accused of ASSAULTING Everett McIver, and despite settling with him for $500,000 everyone called McIver a jealous liar.

Since he retired, he has either been accused of or charged with SEXUAL ASSAULT, DRUG POSSESSION, AND RESISTING ARREST, and every time it's the same thing. Even after retirement, he is so revered here that he gets the benefit of the doubt every step of the way.

Now, flash forward to the present day. Dez Bryant is accused of not paying his bills, letting his pants ride low and acting "childish"....and the same fans and media that literally could not jump to Irvin's defense fast enough over and over and over again over the years are condemning Bryant as a troubled kid who has no future and should be traded immediately. Jerry is an idiot for drafting him, all the pundits were right about him, etc.

It's disgusting, pathetic and indicative of the kind of mindset this fanbase has. As long as you are a legend who wins titles, you can do no wrong. If you're part of a losing team though, forgetting to put a belt on is reason enough to condemn you.

Do you really think our fanbase is any different than any other?

Couple of other things to consider. These past incidents you speak of are pre-internet days. And the culprit had some serious skins on the wall.

Im the biggest M. Irvin fan you will find. he was a winner and a great player. and i do not believe me did most of the things you listed. but i have to say that you make a great point.Randy Moss was never a Cowboy because of some of these so-call doo-gooders, who want nothing but perfect people on the team.and the local cowboy hating media.who wants the cowboys to fail.and as long as Jerry keeps bowing to the pressure.we will keep losing out on players like moss and others. and ending up with the Barbie Carpenter's of the world. your point about Dez is spot on.

Except the woman who accused him of rape was a liar.

Wiki:

False sexual assault allegation

Irvin sustained further damage to his reputation in 1996 when controversy reared its head again as the Cowboys prepared to play the Carolina Panthers for their NFC Divisional Playoff game. Media reports stated that Irvin and teammate Erik Williams had sexually assaulted a Dallas woman, Nina Shahravan, and, with a gun to her head, videotaped the interaction.

Despite Williams' and Irvin's denials of the allegations, the story overshadowed the game, which the Cowboys lost. The accuser was later proven to have fabricated the entire incident. She recanted her story, pled guilty to perjury and filing a false police report and was sentenced to 90 days in prison and a fine.

In a word, yes. Like it or not, our fanbase is filled with bandwagon fans moreso than any other in this country outside of the Yankees and Lakers. This means that, among oter things, we have a lot of uneducated "fans" who enjoy winning, then jump ship and rip the team when they arent as successful.

The Dallas media is the biggest group of self-hating masochistic pot-stirring idiots in the country, and that is not hyperbole. The things they write about anybody who isnt a revered legend would make the New York papers blush. Most of this stems from the fact that Jerry has alienated most of them over the years, and most of the sports writers and reporters in this town for the are buddies with Dale Hanson who has never left any doubt about how little he respects Jerry and what he does.

So what? Go pick up a local paper or listen to a local sports radio show. Both were around in 1996.

And the culprit had some serious skins on the wall.

That's the point

I never disputed that. The issue was that people were defending him LONG before it came out she was full of it.

BTW, you probably shouldnt quote wikipedia as a source in the future. You'll get burned more often than not.

I sincerely doubt there are very many external influences outside Jerry and Stephen Jones' craniums which persuaded them to not draft Randy Moss. Perhaps it had more to do with Moss himself than anything else.

The Dallas Cowboys do not exist within a vacuum. Someone should finally answer the question of why teams other than Dallas did not pick Moss before the Minnesota Vikings did?

Trust me on this one, because I've been around a little but a banwagon fan is nothing more than a casual fan.

All fan bases have them. I don't care if it's the Cowboys or Browns, the Yankees or Royals, the Lakers or Nets.

And there's nothing wrong with casual fans. That's their choice. They're more interested when their team is good. So what, more power to them. Some would argue that they're only casual because they're to busy with life.:D

Unlike most of us here including myself.

Yes it is and I don't deny it. I'm as hypocritical as the next guy.

I'd prefer these guys all be good citizens. But I understand that's not possible.

I don't think there's much dispute that we have more bandwagoners than most. That is what happens when you are as successful as we have been over the years. Also, much like the Yankees and Lakers, we've got a lot of bandwagon fans that immigrated to this country and are looking for a team to cheer for so they can fit in. Again though, the bigger issue is the media that stirs the pot. The local media in Dallas HATES the Cowboys any time they arent winning the SB.

And there definitely people on this board I would consider "casual" fans. Hating a coach or player and letting people know you hate them is one thing, but hating EVERY player and EVERY coach jut because we arent winning is another matter entirely.

Internet or not, SLANT has a valid point. These higher-than-mighty fans are the same ones that are mad that Jerry drafted Dez Bryant over their favorite pet. Sorry that that kind of talent fell right into our lap last year. No way was Jerry going to pass that up.

No matter how you spin it, Jerry was right in taking Dez. I for one am glad he did. He's a kid and he's gonna learn one way or the other how to handle the spotlight and being a Dallas Cowboy.

I wouldnt even have a problem if people were just saying that he needs to grow up, because he does.

The issue is that Bryant didnt commit a felony. He has outstanding debt. Half our 1995 roster was been charged with a crime at some point, but Dez catches more heat than just about any of them did.

Casual Fan? Bandwagon Fan?

What's the definition?

I know one thing as an out of town Cowboy fan. And that's that every Cowboy fan I've ever met in my area is a serious fan.

I think an out of town fan of any team is more likely to be a serious fan than one living in the area.

Here's something else I'm certain of and that's that we have members here who are not Cowboy fans.

Their only purpose here is to troll and bash everything Cowboys. Perhaps some of these people are who you are thinking of.

Let me take a minute to address this heat you speak of.

First off the media coverage of the Cowboys is more intense now than it was in the 90's. And it was intense then.

And the internet does make a difference. You getting a lot more opinions now on something like this than you would've in 1995.

The world's a litle different.

And again I refer back to the trolls here. A lot of what I think you're reading here can be attributed to them.

Any reasonable member of this site understands that these recent minor issues of Bryant's are really nothing.

I was just going to comment on that...

In that case there are A LOT of "unreasonable" fans and media members then. If you started a poll on this board, a good third of the posters would vote to get rid of him one way or another based on what I've read over the past few weeks.

Read this thread

Eight of the first 10 responses are calling for him to be traded/replaced.

Start a poll and let's see. ;)

Should be fun...

Don't ask why should he be gone, just ask a yes or no question.

"Should Dez not be on the Cowboys roster this coming season?"

And, make it a public poll. I would do it, but I get all messed up trying to do a poll, and nobody will explain to me how to post a picture from Image Shack!
:bang2:

This is the American way. The same could be said for the star player in every school. They are given special privileges and are not judged in the same light as your avg. student. Seen it too many times. The boy grows up and has never been said no to and ends up in trouble because they feel untouchable.

Wow, it's really getting slow I guess. We got posts on how bad our own fans are now. Couldn't you come up with something more positive?
