This Is Going to be Frustrating

I think we would all agree that the two biggest problems on the team were the OL and secondary. It is looking very likely that all of the coaches responsible for those two units (Houck, Campo, MAxie) will be back next year.

I think that the impact of coaches on a short term basis is pretty overrated. There's only so much scheme can do to compensate for talent deficiency.

Campo's been the secondary coach here for three years (this stretch) and this was the first year the secondary has been below average (although, to be fair, it wasn't been great either). Even were I inclined to blame Campo instead of whoever decided that Ball was a starting caliber safety, one bad year isn't the end of the world. If Garrett is comfortable retaining him, no cause for concern.

As for Houck, the offense has very efficient the last few years, and although I agree the line is and has been weaker than the skill positions, that is largely a function of where we have invested our resources. His prior resume is excellent, and I think in spite of the abuse the line takes the running game has been, on aggregate, more effective than the running backs. Again, if Garrett's not worried neither am I...and you should't be either.

But they will have a new boss.

I'd like to see Houck get a player like Tyron Smith to work with. Smith is the best offensive line prospect in this draft, I think. Houck hasn't had a blue or red chip player to work with during this tenure with Dallas. I think an assistant offensive line coach will help the offensive line, and Garrett can improve the coaching by adding a new voice and another set of eyes to the offensive line equation. That is certainly one class way to go about the situation.

Houck would still be involved for sure, but he can coordinate the running game and mentor the new coach. The personnel up on the offense is not in good shape at all right now, imo. That unit needs at least two new starters, and it needs Gurode and Davis to play consistently good. That unit needs to get younger, stronger, and more athletic, imo. Getting Gurode's and Davis' eventual replacements in this draft would be nice.

Second level blocking is an issue on this offensive line. If you go back to Felix Jones' time at Arkansas, their line blocked on the second level. Jones exploded right with them and was gone. Full back is an issue in that equation. Dallas needs better personnel and needs to get younger, fast. IMO. I'd start two rookies on the offensive line, and Smith would be one of them at RT. I'd take Smith at 9 and start him. By the end of the year and in the long run, you are setting yourself up for long term success. Plus, it forces you to run the football, and Dallas needs to limit Romo's attempts to 34, any way. The Cowboys should run the football and lean towards balance in their offense.

Campo may not be the DB coach before it's all said and done. He could stay on the staff, though. Time will tell.

What pisses me off is there are teams with lesser players at the same positions that Dallas has but for some reason those players play better than the guys in Dallas.

Two 1st round CBs and both of them played like they went undrafted.

Campo is terrible. There's no other way to put it. He commands zero respect and the only respect he does get is likely out of pity.

Houck seems to no longer have the fire and energy you need. It happens to all coaches sooner or later.
Campo has never struck me as being anything other than adequate.

MY THOSE COACHES SUCK!:banghead:

The Coaches you mentioned are crapola for sure :banghead: ... but the DLine (right up the gut) sucks too!

Yeah it's frustrating because the Secondary (especially in the middle) and OLine isn't the only problem. When you have a Defense that is frail up the middle it's all over but the cryin'..

If Ryan keeps campo on board, then he obviously feels like Dave can do a good enough job in the secondary.

However, I do admit that I'd love to see Campo going somewhere other than Dallas.... but I also admit that I don't know as much as Ryan does about a secondary coach.

Like someone has mentioned, it seems like lesser talented OL's perform better than Houck's group in some cases, but Houck still seems to be highly regarded around the league. Sometimes I think that it is simply lazyness or not thinking that causes the lapses in the Dallas OL. Perhaps if Houck had some extremely hard working, hungry guys to work with (like D Free), the group would perform better. By all accounts the team is planning to shake up the OL, so I suppose we will see.

I'm on the fence about Campo.

On one hand I'll go with Ryan on it, if he decides he's the best DB coach availible, than so be it.

On the other hand, I'd love to see him go if for no other reason but to remove one more whiping boy for all the haters.

But how effective would Houck and Campo have been if Wade actually had a more physical training camp, paid more attention to detail, and actually "changed up" his defense from the 2009 version so opposing offences wouldn't know exactly who was blitzing, etc.?

Heck, at least one of the teams we played said after the game that they knew who we were blitzing, when they were blitzing, etc.

Add to that Colombo's and Ball's issues and it is difficult to get an accurate reading on the two asst coaches.

The first thing that Garrett did as an interim coach was to put pads on the OL on Wednesdays.

Houck will be back - the other two maybe, maybe not. Them going to the Senior Bowl doesn't mean anything.

How do you know that? I've never heard that the players don't respect him. Whether fans respect him or not is of no importance.

Let see.

He was pantsed a few training camps back and then got into a shoving match with one of his players on the sideline.

They do not respect him.

Where were you from 2000 to 2002? The Dallas media spent three years talking about how weak and unmotivating Campo was, how players routinely skipped meetings, how verbal altercations in the locker room were common, etc.

Campo just has a very "wimpy" personality that doesnt command respect

Exactly, It is Garrett choice and to a lesser degree Ryan. I want them to have what they want not what fans want. If we are going to put the burden of blame on coaches then at least allow them to get the people they want without all this crying. Or maybe Jerry should step in?
