Beason calls out Peppers

October 8, 2009 9:55 PM

Posted by ESPN.com’s Pat Yasinskas

Here’s a rather unique story out of Charlotte, where Carolina linebacker Jon Beason said he’s going to have a talk with teammate Julius Peppers about the defensive end’s slow start.

The interesting thing is Beason hadn’t had that talk with Peppers yet when he announced his intentions on Charlotte radio station WFNZ. Beason said the talk would be brief and to the point and he also mentioned the word “intensity.’’

That’s a term that has often come up when it comes to Peppers, who has recorded just one sack this season while collecting more than $1 million per game. Beason has good intentions and this tact could work.

The last person to call out Peppers publicly was Panthers owner Jerry Richardson in training camp before the 2007 season. Richardson said it was time for Peppers to step up and be a leader. Peppers promptly disappeared and posted 2.5 sacks that season.

Then again, calling Peppers out might not hurt. It’s not like he can make less of an impact than he has in the first three games of this season.

The only person this article paints in a bad light is Beason, imo.

Julius Peppers is still a good player but when you are constantly facing double teams and Offensive Coordinators scheme against you, you are going to struggle if someone else on the Defense doesn't step up.

Honestly, this would be no different than someone in the Cowboys locker room publicly stating that they are going to have a talk with Demarcus Ware because of his underwhelming stat sheet.

Nobody ever questions Ware's motor. For Peppers, its been an almost yearly thing.

I like the way Beason plays the game, and I have no problem with him approaching Peppers, but bringing this to the attention of the media is a BAD IDEA.

I agree. A teammate talking to another to encourage him or hell just get after him a little to light a fire under him is not a bad thing but not very smart talking to the media about doing it. That seems more like throwing a teammate to the wolves.

I've always thought Peppers was an underachiever considering his ability. He's one of those guys who everyone knows has all the tools, and he'll have a highlight reel-type game now and then, but he disappears all too often.

He's a complete waste. Keep him away from this team.

And Peppers can't be thrown to the wolves any more than he already is. The whole city is down on him, and would dump him for a ham sandwich if they could.

The only thing I get out of this article is what happens when a team is losing. The wheels are a fallin' off. It's a natural progression and not privvy to the Dallas Cowboys exclusively. Imagine that.

You are right.

The truth is that losing sucks and winning fixes everything. That's just how it works.
