over the last few weeks/months i have read with interest what many of us on this board would do in FA and the draft this year.

i believe that BP will not be here beyond his 2 year contract and a lot of the players that came with him/because of him will be gone as well such as TG, DB, KJ. in addition while our defense is young and should be good for many years, many players on offense will be gone in the next 2-3 years.

most teams who win, do so once players have been together for a while and have time to 'gel' and find their place in the team, on the field, and in the locker room. on the field this is very true on the OL etc.

given these 2 'expectations' on my part i believe that this is the year we have to be really, really aggressive in free agency and hope to have a very good/great draft. i believe that 'standing pat' this year in the hopes that some of our younger offensive players ie AJ, RB, peterman, etc will come good on the OL would be a huge mistake and not only will we go through another dismal year (a repeat of the last half of last year) but we wont have time to recover from this 'hit' with BP and the other older players and who knows who our new coach will be etc. Dont get me wrong, these players (like AJ, gurode, peterman etc) may turn out to be pretty good in the next 2-4 years but i believe that this is one year we just cant afford to take that chance. for the foreseeable future ie next 4-5 years this team with BP as the coach give us the best realistic chance of winning it all.

so i believe that this is the year that we have to 'go for it' and try to fill as many holes as possible with top flight players and not go after 'has beens' with creaky bones liable to break down half way through the season. we really need a o-line that can play together for many years, develop that chemistry together and to start that i believe that we have to get bentley and ashworth (i would love hutchinson but both he and bentley would be too cost prohibitive). not just because these guys are talented but because they are talented and young so provide the best chance for continuity. then we can get the other pieces that we have talked about on this forum like ILB/OLB, kicker, FS.

this is the year to break the bank and the next year is for 'minor tweaking'. if we get caught doing 'tweaking' this year, it will be too late next year to do the major restructuring that is required.

just my 2 cents
