We have some serious problems going on with our defense. I don't care what our ranking is, how teams are scoring, why teams are scoring, or how wonderful our players are...the bottom line is our defense is playing merely average at best.
Against weak teams like Carolina, teams with only 1 real threat (Smith) and almost zero running game this year, we can stop that one playmaker and then shut the offense down. But teams with speed and multiple playmakers are giving us fits. TEams with any balance between the run and pass are giving us fits. Players, Scheme, Coaching, The Moon? I don't know, but we have a problem, and to say we don't is to stick your head in the sand.
Now...that said, I have never believed in the old mantra "defense wins championships." I'd rather have an offense that can score on anyone and an average defense than a great defense and an average offense.
Weak offenses don't score much in the big games or playoffs...weak offenses give other teams more points on turnovers and field position.
I'm thrilled with tonight's win...I expected Vick to have a big game against us because we don't have the type of defense that can handle a talent like him and we have proven we aren't as solid as we'd like to believe in the secondary. But we won against a talented team playing hard on their own field, and we won because our young QB had a good game after struggling for two weeks, and we won because we put up a lot of points.
I'm happy with that, and while I hope someone figures out how to put our defense in a better position to make plays when the playoffs get here, I accepted a long time ago what many refuse to entertain...we are not a top defense...we're an average defense with a few very good players on it. I can live with that if the offense stays healthy and keeps chugging along.
Go Cowboys.
