Why did we not trade Ellis this summer for an above average O lineman?

There's no question Ellis is an above average pass rusher, pass rushers are at a premium in the league, there's DE depth in Dallas, and we have Singleton, Carpenter, and Burnett to man OLB. Why could we have not flipped Ellis for an upgrade over Johnson, Kosier or Petitti? Or even a proven backup QB?

If someone could explain this to me, I'd appreciate it, because it's freakin' killing me.

BEcase right now Ellis and Ware are our only proven Pass rushers, and there weree no elite OL that teams were willing to part with.

We only have two guys that have proven they can get more then 3-4 sacks a year. Trading one would be a real sign of desperation. THATS why it did not happen. Also, no one offered a good deal apparently.

Sounds more like a statement than a question. All I can say is BP plans on keeping Ellis and using him as he sees fit for the betterment of the defense. Please don’t take that as I’m saying your argument holds no water I think in many ways it does but it as of right now Ellis will be a member of this team

i'm not going to replace our only real proven production with some potentail we learned their name about in the last year or two and *hope* they can do the same.

ware seems to be the real deal, but how many "flyers" have we taken on solving the pass rush? how many panned out?

1.

and now you wanna trade him.

hey, i wanna help the OL as much as anyone but it really seems like anytime a player of "value" starts to have issues, they become fan favs for the next blockbuster trade - or to simply trade at all.

Kind of hard to rush the passer when you can't get on the field. It's somewhat desparate to say Ellis will be an upgrade over Singleton, Burnett, and Carpenter.

Just sayin'.

Player for player trades in the NFL are relatively rare. Why? Teams have to match up on players first. How many teams have "above average offensive linemen" they want to get rid of? And if they do, do they need a 31 year old 4-3 DE? Second, there are often salary cap considerations. An "above average offensive lineman" is probably a veteran and the trading team will have to take a cap hit equal to the amount of his accelerated bonus. So that may narrow the field further. And finally, if we trade Ellis for an o-lineman we weaken our pass rush for this year when we're trying to make a run. That would be my guess as to why this hasn't happened.

If Flozell returns to form the line should be decent. Is decent good enough? We'll see. We still can't afford to lose Flo. We could suffer one or two other injuries and survive. But for this year we need to get a little lucky and 1) stay mostly injury free and 2) hope our guys step up. Next April we'll probably use an early pick on O-line.

Its kind of desperate to think Ellis will play full time OLB, and complety fall over the fact that BP is using this position as a way of getting ELlis on the field.

And its also desperate to over look that Burnett has had practive inside, as well as behind Ware.

Also, to be cold, do you really think we would have gotten an "above-average lineman" (or even an average lineman) for him? Face it, no team is going to trade for an over-30 player like Ellis, & they're definitely not going to give away above-average linemen. That's nothing against Ellis, it's reality in today's NFL.
