This Offense doesn't Fit Romo

Hanna? Did you just say the "crappy" giants LB's wont be able to cover Hanna? Did I miss something that turned Hanna into Larry Fitzgerald? This is the NFL. You are suggesting to force the ball into Hanna because of a perception that the giants linebackers are "crappy" and Hanna is too good to be covered by them?

The talent is too great at this level. Every player is fast. Every player can cover. Yes some players have shown the ability to excel over others in some aspects and in some situations. However you don't force the ball into situations where you are expecting Hanna to overcome something he shouldn't be expected to overcome.

So how many passes were thrown to Witten on 3rd down that he didn't catch and led to killing drives?

Don't get your Witten underoos in a bunch.

I counted three (maybe four) forced throws into Witten that were stopped short or fell incomplete on third downs.

...And Hanna runs a 4.47/40 and can catch. He would be utilized in plenty of offenses. Terrance Williams had four or five balls thrown to him, I think they could find a play or two designed to go to Hanna.

Dez didn't get owned there coverage was rolled towards him. Did you not watch the game even the commentators were saying that the giants were not going to let Dez beat them and they think he is one of the best wideouts in football. Maybe if they moved him around a little and motioned him it would have done h well as he is a yac guy but whom am I Jason needs to be more creative to let that happen .

Were you watching the coverage?

***Hint*** Callahan calls the plays now!

You are fooling yourself with that Callahan comment like it really matters. He's still calling plays from Carrot Top's playbook and using his same philosophy. Nothing has changed at all. Nor did I expect it to.

I'm excited to see that we won. But I was a little disappointed with our offense. I would have thought that we would have opened it up more with the weapons that we have.

I remember when Romo was the best out of pocket QB in the league. We would run play action a lot and would make for big plays. All of that is gone now. Romo is nothing more than a pocket passer. I think Garrett's philosophy has gotten to him. No more scrambling out of the pocket and improvising. Its a throwback to the 90s offense now and Romo has become like Aikman.

Sad to say it but seeing our offensive philosophy holding back Romo. Romo is a gunslinger. Let him throw vertically downfield like he used to.

Frankly Im disappointed - especially what Garrett has brought to this offense. Lets discuss this.

Romo has a lot of say in putting the game plan in. This one game should not in any way deter what the Cowboys want to do. You don't jump ship like that they will go back look at what they did good and bad and adjust.

Im not even sure what your gripe is to be honest.

Is it that Romo is played like a pocket passer or that we don't throw downfield enough?

One is not related to the other.

Dez got owned last night. And Williams was just awful.

I think I'm just gonna chalk it up to the Giants defense always playing us tough no matter what.

does wasn't owned, he was triple covered. There's a big difference!

Garrett has been trying to shoe horn Romo into his 1990's fantasy since he has been here.

It sucks but its the truth.

It's a dead end road that ends with failure.

You can't be pass happy and run this style of passing scheme. You'll either have to get a little more creative with moving your guys around, increase your tempo, or be really good at running the ball.

Almost any QB would rather have the time in the pocket to stand, scan the field and throw vs running around for his life...that is unless said QB is a run first QB.

Uh, as CC pointed out in his broadcast, Tony Romo has one of, if not, the quickest release in the league. If anything, he's more suited to a WC-style offense. Hopefully, BC, since his coaching tree is WC, and Romo will start trimming down the offense to plays that take advantage of this skill-set.

But besides that point, this was a totally new deal for the offense wit Romo calling the plays, so one has to expect hiccups. Dallas normally makes a lot more mistakes, so I'm more optimistic for the offense as awhole. They didn't look rushed and quite calm.

Patience has not been one of Romo’s strong suits, but it had to be Sunday with the way the Giants were playing. Their goal was to make sure Bryant did not beat them, sending a safety to his side on almost every play. They gave up the short stuff. It was unlike any defense Romo had seen from the Giants in all of his years starting.

“As a quarterback you always want to attack,” Romo said.

But Romo took what the Giants gave him.

“When Tony’s played his best football throughout his career, he’s done that,” coach Jason Garrett said. “What we try to do in the passing game is provide him with answers and he needs to find the right answers on each and every play.”

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4714492/tony-romo-answers-questions

The Giants defense was determined not to allow Bryant to blow up, like he did in the second half of the 2012 season, when he caught 50 passes for 879 yards and eight touchdowns in the last eight games. New York doubled-teamed Bryant “the whole game,” quarterback Tony Romo said, with a cornerback playing press coverage and a safety over the top.

“Hey, I got my stats through Witt, through Miles, through Tony and the rest of the other guys,” Bryant told ESPNDallas.com after receiving treatment for a foot injury suffered in the fourth quarter. “[The Giants] respected me tonight. I know what I can do. Everybody across this world knows what I can do. And they know, if the ball is thrown my way, I'm going to get to it. I don't care if it's double [coverage], triple or whatever. I'm going to try my best to get to it.

“But we play smart football here. We want to win, and I think we went the smart route tonight.”

That meant not force-feeding the Cowboys' most explosive playmaker. Bryant was targeted eight times, but Romo only took one deep shot to No. 88, and that pass by the wounded quarterback fell well short for an incompletion.

2. Taking the short stuff. 263 yards is a pretty average total for an NFL QB to pass for in a game. Romo routinely puts up 300+ yard games. So what gives? Take a look at his completion/attempts ratio. 36 for 49 on the evening. That's a lot of attempts to only rack up 263 yards. That was Romo being patient and taking what the defense was giving him, which was the short stuff. The Giants were determined not to get beat deep, and they were also determined to shut down Dez Bryant. They rolled a safety his way on every play. After the game Romo said that was a totally new defense from the Giants, one he's never seen them run before. But instead of doing what he's sometimes done in the past and forcing throws downfield, Romo played the dink-and-dunk game and got a victory out of it. BTW, how about a 73% completion rate. Outstanding.

Dez Bryant, but give the Giants credit. They were not going to let the talented receiver beat them. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell put a cornerback in his face and shaded a safety over the top, but also buzzed a linebacker in the flat to take away some of his opportunities to run his slant.

I've been saying this for years. Now it's getting too late in his career to take advantage of Romo's mobility in the pocket. This is Jerry's fault by bring in coaches
that don't know the WCO, but run the timing-based O...

Dez, like D-Ware, was being double-triple teamed most of the night. Excellent game planning by the Gints. It was up to the other receivers & the running game to take advantage of that. We have little in regards to a running game, & some of the other receivers didn't step up. We're lucky the defense scored 14 points, or we would have lost that game. It all boils down to a quality O-line, which we just don't have, to have a quality running game. That opens up play-action, and some over-the-top passes.

Our offense isn't designed to get guys open. It's designed to throw to the open man.

If you wanted an offense that dictates a defense instead of vice versa then we should've scrapped Garrett's system all together.

You can tell the difference a system makes. Just look at Kiffin's system vs Robs.

If we ran a system like the Patriots I don't know who would stop us. Instead we'll just keep letting teams dictate what we do and hope Romo can buy time and make a play from time to time and if he doesn't we'll just call everyone overrated and chokers.

Seems to me taking what was there is better than forcing balls and risking the ints. Dallas played with the lead all night long there was no reason for force any passes. In my view Romo did a good job.

In that aspect you are correct. We did a great job protecting our lead.
