There are a lot of factors at play when it comes to the offense. Bringing in Linehan is a pretty big move I think. A lot of people still aren't sold on the two tight end system, but the choice of Linehan as the Passing Game Coordinator? reinforces the idea that we're entrenched with the idea.
I don't see a ton of personnel changes from last year on offense.
I think you'll see us draft a guard or a tackle fairly early. I'm sure the team isn't completely sold on Leary, doesn't want to go into the season with Bernadeau as the starter, and wants to replace Free as soon as possible. With all those things in consideration, I think a guard is the most likely option. You can replace Free next year.
The other changes will come at WR. The question is how do you replace Miles Austin. Do you replace him with the combined contributions from Williams and Beasley? That is certainly possible, but with that being said, you have to consider the idea that they will want to bring in another receiver relatively high to replace Austin, and to potentially give them leverage against needing to resign Bryant as opposed to trading him. If we stand pat at wide receiver, I think we'll be okay for the time being.
I think the most interesting player going into the year though is definitely Gavin Escobar, who stands the most to gain with the addition of Linehan. He will be in his second year in the NFL, I'm sure he'll be working with Woicik to get bigger and stronger, and he will be featured more consistently in the offense next year.
I was really interested in the idea of getting Sproles, but we still have Dunbar, who if he can return and stay healthy will give us a dimension that Linehan can really use to our advantage.
I think the position that our offense is currently in, gives us a strong advantage in focusing the attention on repairing that defense.
The offense was 16th in the league in yards and 5th in the league in points. I think upgrading the offensive line, and having some players mature within the offense (even if it is a new offense), will pay dividends if they can all stay healthy. The offense should be demonstratively better next year. Just consider that outside of Witten, Dez is actually the most experienced receiver on our offense now. That says a lot about the ceiling on this offense.
