Dallas Cowboys Have a Bad Habit and it’s Why They Won’t be Active in Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys have a bad habit. Well actually they have more than one, but this one particular bad habit is the reason they won’t be able to be active in free agency this off-season. Jerry Jones, and his son Stephen Jones, consistently overpay for players. Whether it be in free agency or when re-signing their own players, they just don’t seem to understand what the right price is.

It didn’t just begin a few years ago but now that the Cowboys are teetering on the edge of the salary cap, the past five years have been a good indication that the team overpays for too many of their players...

I have no issue building through the draft. In fact, I encourage it. The issue is Jerry's inability to make smart draft selections based on needs.

Exactly.

Interesting article.

It bites a little.

I don't agree that all of those contracts where terrible...

The Ratliff one, however, is a recent stinker that casts Stephen Jones in a not so great light. Why? It was evident his play was already declining AND he still had another two and half years left on his relatively cap friendly deal AND he was 30 years old.

In otherword, there was no absolutely no sane reason to extend Ratliff when they did to the extent they did.

Just wait till we over pay for #9...while good-is not the great qb everyone thinks. Yes his stats are great....but our record is average at best.

Who do get to replace #9?

and of course he is expected to catch the passes he throws and block the pass rushers as well.

I guess you miss little details like that

Yeah he did and you can bet that about 8 other teams would love to overpay for number 9.

That's a very good article.

We're about to do it all over again this year, as well, with both Romo and Spencer

Alot of the contracts weren't terrible and it was hard not to resign alot of them considering our 13-3 season.

Yet somehow last year we had the money to be major players in free agency. Sure, we have overpaid on some guys, but at least we're willing to pay. We could be the Bengals, or the Bucs, or the Browns. Teams that are perenially way under the cap. The Packers have signed one FA in the last 4 years. The Steelers lost arguably their best WR today. The Raves lost 2 LB's. People need to stop acting like this an issue exclusive to the Cowboys. BTW, how many teams have really helped themselves in the past by signing a bunch of big time free agents?

True... however, how do you explain the disastrous Ratliff contract?

Didn't say replace...we will over pay because so many other teams (assumed) would pay stupid money for #9. $10-$12 mil is fine, not $16-$18 mil

I didn't like it when they extended him again, but I bet it was "keep Jay happy" money. He's a real moody guy and when he's on the field he has been very productive. It's also possible they had an understanding that they would redo that deal when there was more cap room.

10-12 mil is probably under what Scaub is receiving. I don't think he's going to be paid that amount. It's tough to swallow the amounts QBs are paid. Just like Flacco.

When's the last time Jerry paid hard ball with a player on a contract negotiation?

Emmitt Smith?

If so, I guess he decided to never make that mistake again.
