This really pains me to say......Larry Allen

Last night I posted a thread with evaluation of last years game with Detriot and Kyle Kosier. There is long thread with videos (Thanks theebs) and analysis.

This morning I watched the game again to evaluate Larry Allen just to see the differences.

Granted this is just one game, but it was pretty obvious.

After watching it I now believe Larry Allens days really could be numbered.

If I where grading the 2 players, and knew nothing about either of them, and just watched this game, I would take Kosier.

The obvious difference is Kosier was by far more consistent.

Larry Allen gave up several tackles on running plays, no sacks, but did give up a couple of hits on Bledsoe.

Several times Larry Allen wiffed his man, fell to the ground, and stumbled over his and other peoples feet.

We did not try to pull him one time. When he went to the second level he was inconsistent. If he got to his man in position he had a dominant impact which was good, but to often he wiffed or could not get there in time, and a couple of times gave up tackles.

Larry obviously was more powerfull, and it showed at times, but to often he just could not get or keep himself in position.

Kosier while not flashy, and overpowering was always on his man, in position, and did not give up a tackle, and easily moved a whole lot better.

Take it for what it is worth, and I wish I had more games of Kosier, but it just seems the more I watch the better I am feeling about this move.

And it hurts because Larry Allen is one of my favorite Cowboys of all time, but with what I watched and the money involved maybe Jerry and Bill know what they are doing.

I remember Allen being very inconsistent as well. It seems like one play he would blow the defender up and the next he would watch someone run around him. That being said, I would be curious to see how he did before Flozell went down with injury. For some reason I seem to remember Adams and Allen having a chemistry that made them both better, but it is a long season and my memory isn't the.........what was I talking about?

I've been trying to tell these folks this...the film don't lie.

Just image running a screen play to Kosier's side...oh, the possibilities!

Champ, are we the only ones that record the Cowboys games? Surely, it can't be.

Not sure, but I have been recording the Cowboy games for years now. I only keep the wins though and record over the loses. It pains me to much to go watch us lose again.

It really is great to go back and rewatch them, and they come in very handy during times like this.

Sure would be nice to see more games to better evaluate Kosier & I guess he is indeed our new LG but that is kind of hard to believe/accept, particularly since Allen still on the team--until April 2--when I think his $2M bonus is due. I've posted about cutting Allen cause of his declining efforts/talent and using the $3.5M cap savings to pick up another good OG but I was thinking more of Hutchinson then of Kosier. Anyway, certainly believe Parcells & Ireland have looked closely at Kosier's game film and must feel very confident to sign him knowing he's replacing a HOF player. Parcells is good at assessing OL players, although certainly not the case in Dallas.

I think if Larry hadn't made the last two Pro-bowls, which he didn't deserve, then people would have a more realistic view of how poor his play is.

It's a funny thing about watching tape, depending on your stance you can see whatever you want. Take watching replays during a game. I could have 10 different people watching a sack and each one could point out a different person to blame or wasn't doing their job.

One would say the QB held onto the ball too long, that in the 3 step drop he should have gotten rid of the ball even if it meant throwing it out of bounds.

Another might say that the RB had to step up but failed.

Another might say that the tight-end should have squeezed the DE in toward the line so that the didn't get to the RB level too fast.

Another might say the Tackle should have pushed the DE out and get back to his zone because the TE would chip and the RB was the safety.

Another might say that had the Guard not helped the Center double up his man then the tackle wouldn't have had to occupy the gap and the Tight-end wouldn't have had to squeeze in towards the line and the RB wouldn't have had to step up.

Another might say that the Center couldn't handle his man so the entire blocking scheme went to heck.

Point is, we don't know the blocking schemes they have implemented so we don't know who caused what, if it was a cascading effect or if the QB should have just gotten rid of the ball faster on a short drop.

Now, while I agree that Allen has lost a big step and seems to have problems in space, since I don't know the schemes, I will leave the tape-watching to Parcells and crew.

he has been like this for at least 2 years now. This is why I felt the o-line was in bad shape at years end. I thought we needed center help/RT and a G to replace Allen. He was a great Cowboy, and 1 of the best of all-time but the fact is he cant move well anymore. Time to move on IMO

Oh there is no doubt that we are in the last days of the "Allen" era. We didn't bring this guy in to play at RT or ride the pine.

For salary cap purposes this will be a "wash". What we are paying the new guy will fill the extra cap space of what we'll gain by cutting Allen.

We are in essence trading Allen straight-up. Is that a good deal for us?

You bet. I love Larry Allen, but he's not the player he was and he's not even as good as the guy we just signed. It is a positive addition to the team.

I wouldn't bank on Allen being cut just yet. We still don't know how Adams is recovering from his injury. The last thing we need is Tucker and Kosier on Drews blind side.

Now go back in watch every game Larry Allen played this year, then go back and watch every game Kosier played this year, then tell me who is better

Sorry Bro, Allen is a goner. His declining play does not warrant that inflated contract. Yes, Kosier is probably better than LA at this point in his career. Maybe Gurode will be given a chance to compete with Rivera for the RG position. Most fans were not too excited about his play either.

Adams is supposedly ahead of schedule. He should be fine.

And if we do bring in Neal then you can officially start the "Bye and Thanks Larry" thread.

That is why I said it is one game. I wish I could watch every game Detroit played last year, but I doubt there is anyone on this planet that would have recorded vidoes of the Lions games.

IMO, it is better to have something to go off of, than nothing.
