NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports the New York Giants quietly worked out veteran free agent PK Mike Vanderjagt last month. But the Giants opted to sign PK Marc Hickok, who previously kicked in Afl2, the minor league for the Arena Football League.
Vanderjagt's agent, Gil Scott, said his client's workout for the Giants went well; Vanderjagt connected on 11 of 13 field-goal attempts. It was just that the Giants opted to go with the younger -- and much less known -- Hickok.
Now Vanderjagt, the most accurate kicker in NFL history, is a man without a team. This offseason, he has worked out for the Saints and Giants, but hasn't received any offers. One of the knocks on Vanderjagt is that he's not well liked in the locker room.
But Scott responded to that charge by saying: "Ask WR Terrell Owens. Ask HC Tony Dungy. They'll tell you (Vanderjagt) is well liked." Another knock is that Vanderjagt struggles with kickoffs, but Scott insisted that the Colts and Cowboys were satisfied with that aspect of his client's game.
