No this is not to say that we are going to win it all or that we are destined for success. Since 1989 we have been seeing the same approach of 4-3 one gap, man defense with a timing based Coryell offense paired with a power running game. We switched up the defense in 04 for a bit when Ware was in town but we immediately went back when he left. The offense has been stagnant the whole time from Turner to Moore. This team certainly will use some of those concepts but it is not that.

On defense, we have been clamoring for a multiple front that can put the dline into positions to succeed regardless of what the offense is doing. We saw that on Sunday. We gave up some middle isoes on the first few snaps. By the third snap, Q dialed up a 3-4 look but the very next snap he started 2 gapping over both guards with edges out wide. Initially it was with Golston and Osa but doubles on both got push so he put Hankins in the look over a guard. Hankins held the point of attack in that look so from that point on he had Hankins, Mazi, or Gallimore in the front and it was on.

Contain was a problem because we were stunting inside and man calls were vacating the LB in coverage. Jones was looking for it and getting chunk plays. Q started calling zone under to keep them home and outside of a Fowler brainfart, it was contained. This all happened in the first two series.

The Giants had no answer and Q started moving 11 around on passing downs. This caused the Giants front to panic and overadjust. We all saw what happened. I really do not think people grasp how good this defense is going to be. I have no even mentioned the physicality in our pursuit or the savviness of our coverage.

This offense is nothing like what we have seen. I would like to start by saying that in the aftermath of this game we have been seriously underrating the Giants front. Lawrence, Robinson and Williams are absolute monsters up front and were giving Edoga and Biadasz in particular fits. Their pursuit behind them is fast and they tackle well. Our tackle play was outstanding.

As for the offense itself, the runs are what they are but we don't just run straight into them like we used to if the defense is talented and crowding the middle. We are finally seeing those designed sprints to substitute for the run like Peyton Manning used to eviscerate us with. The 7 step long developing play is gone. Long developing plays are now out of play action or by moving the pocket. Thank goodness. We got Romo pummeled doing those 7 step routes out of empty sets. The TE are motioning into the backfield or staying inline and squeezing for pass pro.

Once it started raining and the ball was coming out erratic from Dak's hands and passes were just slipping off of receivers hands, MM responded by getting the ball out quickly. Giants pursuit did a good job bottling it up with their tackling but we did not turn the ball over.

The days of choo choo, you know what we are doing but you cannot stop it are over. Now we respond to what is going on in the environment and what the defense is trying to do to counter us. It's about time.

We said the same thing after the Minnesota game last year. Then physical running teams had their way with us.
I didn't say that.

At the end of the day you need size and talent to stop the run. As I described, once Q dialed up Hankins in that 2-4 look the middle isoes were stopped. Football is a complex game and it's not all one thing but e have one heck of a synthesis of talent, size, and scheme that we sure as heck have not enjoyed before.

On offense, I had some hope a few years ago when we used sprints and screens instead of running into Vea and Suh against TB. Moore went right back to choo choo.

While I am hoping for a great season this was one game. The Giants, while they didn’t do themselves any favors, are certainly not as inept as they looked on Sunday. If Dallas plays this way against SF then I might start to actually believe this season and this team might be different from previous iterations.

Can't tell yet if the offense is different until they get to play in better conditions so we will find out this week. As for the defense it looks really awesome and shades of the Jimmy defenses. Speed, smart and come in waves. Relentless and urgent. Playmakers all over the field. DQ doing excellent job in dialing up the schemes and plugging in players where they can succeed. Fun to watch, gotta keep it going though.

And then we traded for Hankins and we had a stout run defense. That wasn't the problem last year.
It was when it mattered most. SF took control of that game in the second half on the ground. Wore us down completely. Same as they did the year before in the playoffs.

I started off the thread stating that I am not saying that we are going to win anything to try and head of this type of thing.

You do not "believe" in this team. Great. How about the schematic differences I detailed?

Let’s take them one game at a time. But they sure made some plays. Shut them down.

Our ineptness on offense contributed to that significantly. Between only having one viable playmaker after Pollard went down and Dak throwing into coverage hoping to make a play we hung the defense out to dry.

I was just contemplating the same thread. This year feels much different than anything we have seen in a long time.

Things that jump out:

  • Preparation - It has been a while since we have seen a Cowboys team open up the season full throttle in all phases. Case in point; the FG block on the Giants opening drive looked like it was choreographed. The dual block of the FG by Thomas and his huge block to spring #19 (on the team for, what, a week?) was executed to perfection. Young role players making a big difference.
  • Quinn has developed a fierce defensive scheme that has been cultivated with a rich mix of superstars and productive role players who are unselfish and play complimentary football. The team speed, team hustle and ability to rotate guys is going to show up all year.
  • The offense will take a little time to fully synchronize, but the first game was vey positive. No turnovers or sacks on a very wet night. Pollard 5ypc. Drops are an issue, but wet ball a factor. I see McCarthy using the O to compliment the D's dominant play by not having them do too much. Ball control, quick release, high percentage passing game. Let the receivers do their thing after the catch.
The Cowboys are better that they were in 2022.

At this point, I have only one minor concern.

The offense has to be crisper and Dak has to be sharper. But for now, I am chalking that up to not having much preseason action and the weather. On the positive side, Dak didn't force any bad balls Sunday night.

Great post. This D is built with versatile players that allow Q to play these games of chess with opposing offenses. We have some great players, but as you described it's more than putting having you guys beat the one in front of you. Its going to be a fun season, especially when we go against some of the more creative OCs in the leauge.

I don't think we've seen anything on the offense yet. We had the quick passing game on display, but I think there will be some wrinkles that Mike and Brian are holding onto. They kept it vanilla during a game where they didn't need a big offensive performance.
