Great Post.
It is the Cowboys M.O. to be the biggest and baddest coaster in the park. But oh how sweet the highs are.
If you're a TRUE Cowboys fan, everyone knows it... the Star stickers on your car, the ballcaps on your head, the jackets the hoodies ... all of it. Everyone knows your a Cowboys fan, and everyone takes shots at you when the team struggles and everyone has an opinion on why or what is causing the snickering that you smile and endure.
But the best part is the looks on the faces of fans of opposing teams when the Dallas Cowboys are fielding a quality football team. A good Cowboys team tends to take a similar form when we have good teams- lots of "Scary" good big time players surrounded by solid talent and top notch specialists. This team is staring to look a bit like those great Cowboys teams. Not exactly, but we have pieces of the puzzle in place.
When we start winning football games the whole world goes silent until they can breathe again after a Cowboys loss. Because the whole world knows that the history of this ballclub while peppered with heartbreaking losses-shows that this team is indeed THE enduring franchise in the NFL.
The entire sports world sleeps with the lights on wondering when the Cowboys will get it rolling again, and takes a turn at keeping us down as best they can.
But eventually the train rolls out and picks up steam. You can hear the seething contempt for the team hissing in the locomotive engine that is Dallas Cowboys football. The sneers become straight faces, and the snickers become begrudging backhanded compliments. The contempt is buried by quiet respect. Field goals become touchdowns, and sacks become sack/fumbles, batted balls become pick 6's.
The Star shines brighter and goes supernova.
How many people remember these moments? Your friends stare at the screen and see a graphic showing the rolling Dallas Cowboys are on their upcoming schedule.
Where are the snickers then? Where are the comments? How bad do we suck again? But the thing is as Cowboys fans... you don't have to say anything.
You just watch and enjoy your favorite team do it's thing, and let the chips fall where they may. Clearly you picked the right team in 1982 to root for despite that day's outcome, clearly they did not. Or noone would care.
And we picked the right team to root for despite 44-6. Remember that.
