This team reminds me of the 49ers of 81

In 81, the 49ers were a really young team that was trying to find itself. They had a lot of talent but they were missing that leader on the defensive side of the football that made them a great team. They started the season something like 1-2 that year. They traded with San Diego for Fred Dean and the rest is history. They went on to go 12-1 the rest of the way. They needed that one guy who could kinda finish it off for them. Our team needs that guy to step up IMO. I think we're really close now. While a lot of fans see us slipping, I see us breaking out this year. I honestly believe that Roy was the final piece. I know we have injuries at CB but we also have some talented young guys. Much like those teams in SF, we have some guys who could be very good DBs. This is a perfect opportunity for RLW to come back and really step up. Make a difference, so to speak. I just think that we are real close now. We have some injuries but it's nothing a good team can't work through if they just stick together. We have an experienced backup that can come in and settle the waters a little bit. He'll make the smart plays for us. He won't escape the sure sack but he will get rid of the ball to avoid the sack. He'll take what's given and he can win. Our DL probably played the best game they've played all season against the Cards last Sunday. Honestly, if we don't give up 17 on special teams, we're winning that game going away. Our OL is going to get Koshier back soon. Once he's back in the lineup, our OL is going to improve. I think we are in a good position to win this year. We just need to keep working on it. Injuries and mistakes will take care of them selves if we can just do this IMO.

I've got no problem with anything you said although anything about the 49s makes me uneasy.

RWR fills the only hole on offense so I see us starting to jell.

very good interesting thought and while your at it, think about the 91 cowboys going into the 92 season, the cowboys were a very young team then and trying to find their identity.

What did the cowboys do after 91 season, they traded for thomas everett a ball hawking safety, and they traded for charles haley, boom dominant defense.

i think the cowboys are very close on defense to the 91 defense, they just need one dominant hard nosed player that is feared by offenses ;

another thing to think about, the 49ers best to my memory had a very young defensive backfield, too, like the cowboys now in some ways, and like the cowboys in 92;

i think the cowboys need a ball hawking defensive back. I am not sure how much ty law has left, but he is a ball hawking defensive back, maybe he could provide that spark, if he can be had cheaply.

think about what campo said about adam jones, he attacks the ball, most of our other defensvive backs dont attack the ball. Who had the most passes defensed? Give up? Yes, it was Adam Jones,

Maybe ty law can help us, if he wants one more superbowl and championship.

Another thing to think about, how many interceptions has the cowboys secondary had, give up? Yes, just one by the secondary, and that one was by hamlin last week. Maybe that says alot right there.

Now what that points to, pass rush, or defensive back coverage or whatever I dont know, but its an interesting thought.

I wasnt born then, but my first though is this.

Did the '80 49ers go 13-3 or 12-4 or anything like that, and have a first round bye?

Because after last year, we're not that young of a team, and we should have already "found" ourself.

Good thing we have the equivalent of Bill Walsh on our sideline and Eddie DeBartalo in the front office. Oh wait ...

If we can't improve our special teams, penalties/mistakes and defense, I see us getting knocked off. It's early and there is time for improvement. We've also had a lot of injuries and distractions - to me - it doesn't have that championship season feel.

I've said it a hundred times - it bothers the **** out of me that there are no leaders on this team - from top to bottom - none. Leadership to me, is huge.

Color me a little more pessimistic than most.

Not at all. I felt better about last years team. :mad:

I feel the same.

But I bet you the Colts felt better about their 04 and 05 teams than they did in 06.

But they won in 06.

I can guarentee you the Pats felt better last year during the regular season than ANY of their Super Bowl years.

Maybe this team needs this a little? Who knows. I just hope we start getting back to what we're capable of.

I often wonder about the "finding yourself" theory/talk?

Should it be that or "Creating Yourself"???

Very astute observation for someone not born in 1981. God I'm getting old.

Starting to think it might just play out for us that way this year.

Unlike previous years we may just be playing our best and be at our most dangerous for the stretch run and post-season.

Here's why:

1) Roy Williams addition is huge and I think all would agree that his presence/impact should increase week to week. I'd guess somewhere between games 12-16 he'll be on par with our other WR on the playbook.

2) I think we get Pacman back and he helps. Maybe game 10, maybe game 14. By playoff time he'll be an impactful player.

3) Newman should be back for Washington in limited capacity and I would think full speed between weeks 10-12.

4) Last but not least Anthony Spencer. I was very bullish on him coming into training camp. I saw flashes last year and even more in preseason.
He's our x-factor on defense. He's explosive and gives us another key edge rusher/play maker for the front seven.

This is a whole lot of addtional impact type players for the final quarter of the season.

BTW B&G, posting that photo on this site will get you a serious *** kicking.

Speaking of serious *** kicking, I wouldn't bother watching the Cowboys/suckskins rematch in Washington.
