This week, will we play more Man-to-Man or more Zone on D?

I think we'll do some man-to-man coverage, but mostly I think we'll play zone. Personally, I still prefer that play man-to-man because QB's tend to get more frazzled with that because we can blitz more. A lot of this will have to do with Garcia being the Eagles' QB. He does have above average accuracy but does not have the strongest arm. So even though the coverage isn't as tight in zone, playing in zone will still allow our secondary to make up ground as Garcia's throws take an extra second to arrive. That's why I think Parcells will play more Zone, even though a man-to-man scheme and intense blitzing will bait Garcia into multiple picks.

Your thoughts?

Since he doesnt have great arm - I think you can get away with more blitzing. That being said...they will have to spy Westbrook because Garcia will look for him under pressure. I would dare Garcia to beat you down the field because right now he is making a living on throwing underneath.

Interesting. Carp did a good job shaddowing Vick. After that test, shaddowing Westbrook could be a cakewalk for him. Let's hope he follows up one good game with another.

Also, GArcia has hit a few down-field throws, but he puts way too much arc on the ball. This is a game where Roy Williams can have a good day back there in coverage; because the fact that he's slow to the ball will be nullified by the fact that Garcia's thows will be slow getting to the WRs.

I think man on the outside, zone with the linebackes and roy playing around the line.

I think the game plan is to make garcia have to throw the deep ball.

Pretty good topic...

I don't think you can arbitrarily go "zone" or "man" for the entire game. The problem with man of course is that the corners can only hang with the receivers for so long (see the Atlanta game). However we know Garcia isn't going to be throwing any 40 yard passes.

And then we have the problem of linebackers not knowing their responsibilities or the scary thought of Roy having to cover LJ Smith (much screaming on this one). On the plus side I can see Glenn/Newman being able to adequately cover Westbrook/Stallworth.

In a zone vs Garcia we probably don't have the issue of the safeties being tested real deep. But again we have to worry about the linebackers dropping into their zones correctly.

We got our butts kicked in man because we couldn't pressure Vick. Philly's Oline is much better than Atlanta's. We'll be sticking with the zone, probably, and I think the safeties will be tested again, because we can't let Westbrook get loose in the flats. Newman and Henry will have to play more shallow.

I agree I think Dallas will be able to do a lot more things aginst Garcia than some other QB's. Unlike Vick, Garcia is not going to kill you with his legs or big arm

Garcia presents problems somewhat different than Vick. Garcia won't kill you with his legs but he is a pretty accurate passer and he has a good OL in front of him. We can do more things to try and get pressure on Garcia but we simply must handle the RB's. They are doing much more play action these days and that will make the LB's job harder.

I agree. Philly is not running their offense as they did with McNabb, they are running the ball a lot more and throwing the high percentage passes instead of looking for the 1 big play. I think if Dallas can keep Philly in 2nd/3rd and long we will be able to get to Garcia but it starts by stopping the Philly ground game

I agree. Garcia is vulnerable any time he has to throw it 20 yards, and he has a 90+ rating against the blitz.

I find it very interesting that Garcia has a 90+ rating against the blitz. I suspect we're better off then playing in zone coverage. I also hope that the LB's are not fooled by play action. One way around that is to have Carpenter play more snaps and shadow Westbrook the whole game. That way, if it's a hand-off then Carp (and Ware) plays the run, and if they swing Westbrook out for a pass, then Carp can follow him in coverage.

The Saints threw a ton of flairs/screens against Dallas and our LBs had trouble covering them. Often times we simply did NOT cover them at all. We were better at that against Atlanta, but even in that game we left of few of those wide open and let them get by. Both Brees and Vick are not dump-off-pass guys, but Garcia is. And the signature dump-off-pass (like screens and flairs) for this type of QB is to the backs out of the backfield. By now we should have those schemed better on defense; partly using Carp to shadow Westbrook and cover the dump-offs would do the trick, and that would free up Ware to focus solely on pass-rushing and run-stuffing the hand-offs.

considering that we have struggled a lot this year against the deep ball really that really scares me.

well that is the game plan. Frustrate him and make him force it deep.

He doesnt have the arm manning and vick had. He is similar to brees, but brees throws a terrific deep ball.

IF we make garcia throw the ball deep by tackling well and frustrating the underneath stuff we will be in good shape.

I agree and in the meantime I hope Dallas can run the ball down Philly throat. Philly has looked bad aginst the run and if we can get our own running game going I think it will open up some big plays down field. This game does not need to be a TO vs Philly game

But that's the problem...we do not blitz. And when we do, we still can't get to the QB. That is why this game scares me a little.

Considering Garcia rarely attempts anything over 20 yards, and only completes about 25% of the passes he does attempt over 20 yards, I don't think that will be an enormous concern. Covering the flats and tackling will be, though.

Yup, especially Westbrook. I think we'll play more zone because limiting YAC is how you beat the WCO. People are going to hate it, but it will be another 'bend-don't-break" game.

I doubt we'll get effective pressure in any case this weekend, considering how well Philly's Oline has played, and how poor our Dline has played. Might as well contain them and hit hard.

Beat the Eagles:

Stay in Nickel 4-2-5. Put RW in the Box and assign him Westbrook/RB. Allow the DL to fire off the ball and bring pressure.

We win big.

Hopefully:)

Now that's a form of prevent defense that I like bewcause it will allow us to
blitz sone but still contain the short-pssing game. I strted this whole thread by saying I hope we play man-to-man and blitz a lot, but after reading everyone's posts I'm inclined to now think we should CowboyZone them. :)

If we zone-cover them and pick our spots with the blitz we will defenitely friustrate Garcia and limit their scoring. And then we will outscore them because we should be able to run and throw at them with ease. This will be the game where our offense wins it by moving/controlling the chains. We'll even have a ton of big plays as their whole D is based on blitzing; and Romo can beat their blitz.
