Based on the chatter of Seattle's asking price for Thomas, a #1, #3, and a player, I hope Dallas goes in another direction. Still worried Jerry will do something stupid but hopefully he is not that stupid. Thomas has also been rumored for years to be looking past football. Never a good thing. Lastly, at 29 he is asking for $11MM+ to sign. No doubt looking for that last big payday. Also a red flag.

Dallas needs a ballhawking S in a large way. They have had a clown car of JAGS at the position for years. The price tag for Thomas is too high. Mathieu, on the other hand is 4 years younger, and is a ballhawking playmaker. Not quite the player Thomas is but considering the cost I think Dallas needs to focus some effort on him and not Thomas.

Thoughts???

I agree. Unless that asking price comes WAAAAAY down for Thomas and you can work out a reasonable deal with him before the deal goes through that is...
 
My thought is we do nothing of significance in FA when it comes to possibly signing a legit starting safety. Not saying that in a pessimistic way either.

So, if Jones goes to CB full time we have Frazier, Woods and Heath at Safety.
In a small sample size Frazier looked good on stopping the run/being the box safety.
They moved up to take Woods, so, I'm sure they are willing to give him a shot at winning one of the spots.
Heath is a do it all, master of none player in that he is a good ST player and a so so safety. Has the athletic ability and seems to be the only one who can occasionally go after the ball in the air.
IMO we go after another safety in the draft.

But we'll see. Maybe we can snag a decent safety who finds the market dried up
 
Both are pretty good players but, way overpaid and not worth the investment at this point. You
can get a good safety in the draft even though that is not the position we need to concentrate on.
Look for LG, swing T, 2 LB's and a fast TE. Time to depart Scandrick, Witten and Dez.

Realistic thoughts or dreamscape? realistically neither will play in Dallas. Dreamscape? Eva Longoria. She would be one heck of a safety valve!! No seriously, dream would be getting Derwin James in the draft. Packaging enough together to move up to get him is a far more realistic dream than ET OR Badger playing here IMO

I would say Mathieu is elite but I don't know if he is still elite.


IMO, Mathieu is more of a in the box type of guy. Like a Nickel corner / safety walked down type.


Also, he had a horrible knee injury and when I watch him he clearly doesn't move around like he used to.


I don't see Mathieu as a centerfielder and I think Byron Jones already shares that same skill set.

I agree with people that say Byron isn't that great of a safety but I think he's still a good DB with upside as a corner.

For me... I'll pass on Mathieu. I wouldn't be upset if we signed him but he's not the centerfielder we need.
 
I want Thomas... he is from Texas and wants to come home and his old DC is now here and the heir apparent to Marinelli

He has 3-4 productive years left and its obvious after the game in Dec he wants to be here. Seattle is demanding too much at the moment for a guy on a one year deal— but they are in a rebuilding mode.

The closer we get to the draft— the more valuable picks become— and they will move him b/c he is not in their long terms plans.

We are in talks for him— but we can definitely be outbid for him. I don’t want him for a #1 and #3 for sure. BUT— IMO, he is worth the #19 pick overall, and a day three pick to sweeten the pot is fine by me— not another top 100 pick though.

We need to hold out and trust that Earl has a part to play here as well. If he is unwilling to sign with anyone else but us— teams will start to walk away and all the leverage comes our way.

The good news is we don’t HAVE to make this move either. We can stay put and still add talent— BUT the chance to add an elite player is definitely intriguing.

The next few days could be really interesting
 
Do we even know what our own safeties are? First let's assume the Jones will convert to CB. That isn't even a given but lets assume. That leaves Frazier, Heath and Woods. Just my thoughts and I may be way off but Frazier seems like a Barry Church clone. In the box, between the hash marks, solid tackler when the play is in front of him but a liability in coverage as the safety over the top. So does that make him a SS? Heath? Not great in the box, between the hash marks, not great in coverage either unless we're in the dime and he can play center fielder and be the rover. To me he's just a dime guy. Neither a SS or a FS. Woods? I have no idea. We screwed around with him as a slot corner and a FS and he's short. I'm all in on Richards evaluating these guys as an out sider coming in. We've missed on every safety who has walked in the door since Roy 1 and Woodson. Eventually we destroyed Roy 1 by moving him out of his strength and using him in coverage. We suck at safety evaluation. Show us what you got Richards!!
 
If Thomas is still on the Seahawks on day 2 of the draft, I can see a deal getting made then, and not for a 1st and a 3rd.

Don't think this matter is dead just yet. We shall see though.

Agree.

On top of that he had a horrible knee injury and I don't know if he'll ever gain back all of his athleticism.

Mathieu is a decent player with a famous nickname. He isn't really that special, and never was.

There are LOTS of Tyrann Mathieus in the NFL. There are only 2-3 Earl Thomases.

Thomas is a special player. Mathieu never was.

Thomas is a great player but a 1st and a 3rd for a 29 year old player in a contract year, no thanks.
 
Mathieu is very good, only 25 and better than what we have here. Thomas is way out of range and at 29 not worth the huge price tag.
