Those bad moves in Philly weren't Chip Kelly's fault, says Chip Kelly

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Chip Kelly spin on his Philadelphia Eagles demise is now a matter of public record. Here's how Kelly scored his remarkably responsibility-free (by his account) reign on Wednesday at the NFL owners' meetings: He was given power by ownership that he never asked for. His pursuit of Marcus Mariota never happened. His free-agent additions during his tenure were signed to contracts he had nothing to do with, by a personnel department he didn't run. And he apparently never really spoke to his executive nemesis Howie Roseman, whose name Kelly basically refused to speak.

Kelly could have saved everyone a lot of time this week by wearing a T-shirt that said: "Don't ask me, man. I just coached there."

Looking back, it was a stance that might have been suspected. But looking forward, it might not bode well for the San Francisco 49ers. Consider that the franchise is already on the doorstep of two pivotal quarterback decisions: What to do with Colin Kaepernick, and whether or not to spend a high draft pick on the position. How that plays out could ultimately be the difference between a successful rebuild or yet another ugly round of divorce court for both Kelly and the 49ers

He'll waste at least 3-4 years of the 49ers time, which I have no problem with quite frankly.

Bad Karma from the team that supposedly came back from the dead, while Dallas was supposed to be actors in the Walking Dead.

If you read the article, what he said is basically true. He is saying he picked the players but never negotiated the contracts. I would doubt a head coach with little NFL experience would negotiate huge contracts anyways or be in direct contact with agents. It makes sense considering the Eagles are still handing out some questionable contracts now and they have been doing it since before Kelly showed up.

Kelly is not denying that he didn't want Murray or anyone else. He is blaming some of their failures on injuries and saying he didn't negotiate the contracts that have been dumped this offseason.

I don't care that he didn't negotiate the Murray deal. He told them he wanted Murray. He went after him so they could give him a lot of money.

When it should have been very clear that Murray did not fit their system.

As many of those players didn't fit his systems. That's on the coach.

He's deflecting to try and seem like he didn't make mistakes with his personnel decisions and he clearly did. The guy thinks it's college football and you can just plug in anyone, anywhere, and it'll work.

Not saying he is not at fault. He even said that in the article that he picked the players, I'm just saying if you skim the article and look at the actual quotes...he is simply denying that he assisted in the contract negotiation process.

"I've never negotiated a contract in my life," Kelly said at one point. "I've never had a conversation with an agent in my life. I had nothing to do with any contracts. … We never told [Roseman] to get them at any cost. We just gave an evaluation of who we like and who the good players are."

I don't care one way or the other, just playing devil's advocate and I thought the article was misleading.

Eagles Vice President of Football operations Howie Roseman took responsibility for the selection of Marcus Smith in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, but the circumstances around the most disappointing first-round selection in recent memory sparked a feud that eventually culminated with Chip Kelly's firing.

Roseman and the Eagles' scouting department had minimal input over the three drafts during Chip Kelly's tenure as head coach, according to a former member of the front office who spoke to NJ Advance Media on the condition of anonymity. That person asked not to be identified because he is not authorized to comment on the franchise's personnel decisions.

"Right before that draft, the scouts set the board," the person said Tuesday. "Then Chip got a hold of it and totally turned it around. Scouts had no say at all in that draft. Anybody that Chip didn't want, that player's card got removed from the board and thrown in the trash. Those guys were never even in the discussion.

"Almost immediately, you had a lot of scouts looking around and wondering, 'Why am I even working? Why the hell are we even here?' We put all of this work in, put the information in and Chip changed everything and took whoever he wanted to take."
