Answered Immediately and Well
- Spencer – he played pretty well for his rookie debut. He certainly made his presence known, and actually had a sack (though not a statistically relevant one) on that 2-pt conversion attempt.
- Ratliff – filled in fairly well for the injured Ferguson. I’m still worried about our middle against the run (I hate seeing those 2-yd gains ripped into 7-yd chunks straight up the gut), but all-in-all I’d have to say that he stepped up when it was his time. He also had our only sack of the night!
- Crayton – How about Patrick filling out the 2nd WR role? I’d venture to say that he did a pretty strong job of providing a valuable target as an alternate to TO.
- Hurd - He came up big as a #3 when his number was called at the end of the game.
Answered (but somewhat muddled)
- Reeves – I guess he did a serviceable job considering this was his first outing (Wade said as much), but that TD to Burress was really difficult to swallow. Cushion by design is one thing, but nobody designs a cushion 3 yards deep in the end zone (except on a Hail Mary).
OK – so some of the young bucks stepped up and answered the call. What bothered me were the veteran guys who are supposed to answer the call every week, but didn’t.
Veterans Who Never Even Heard the Bell
- Roy Williams – I have been a huge supporter, but I am honestly running out of excuses – he is out of position way too much. He provided zero impact on this game.
- Ayodele – He is Claude Raines out there.
- Spears – Different coach, same impact.
- Canty – At least had one tackle for a loss, but zero pressure on Eli.
- Henry – Really needed to step up given Newman’s injury. Meh.
What say you?
On the money, nice work.
Spencer didn't make an enormous splash on defense but comparatively speaking, he was one of the 'stars' for the game really on D...Definitely saw more out of him in Week 1 then we did the inactivated Carpenter from last season in Week 1...THAT has to be a good sign, non?
It was my thinking earlier in the week that even without Glenn, I had good confidence that the offense and the WRs would respond...They had too, right?...And Crayton and Hurd certainly made some nice plays...I agree with the much older Madden that they have to get TO involved earlier in games...How come everyone on the planet understands this concept yet Dallas seems to fumble the ball on getting TO involved early?...Especially with no Glenn...Yet, Witten helped open things up conceivably and the offense eventually rolled despite the slower start...There is good depth at WR and they need to step up, Glenn or no Glenn...Now's their chance to shine...I think this will be an area we will see continued improvement...Still, let's face it, a healthy Glenn out there would've made things impossible for the Giants...How scary is that?
I'd also throw in McBriar and Folk on special teams, they played very important roles in the win as well...They definitely showed up.
I'm right there with you on Reeves too...I hated how he was getting abused by Plaxico but the cushion was really pretty ridiculous, especially what looked like 5 to 7 yard cushion from the 4 yard line that resulted in an easy TD....Just horrible positioning, who let that happen?...Jacques or the DC?...Just seems stupid....Still, he ended up calming down and playing much better in the 2nd half....As I recall though, he was like this before, up and down so hard to get too excited about things yet.
As for the 'losers' of the night, I too am tired of hearing the hype on Roy Williams...He's overrated, fact...I'm done with Roy...He's a seive back there and I can't even recall the last time he made a legitimate play, particularly tackling...Is Safety what he really should be playing after all?...Somehow I think maybe he should get moved to LB or something...He's utterly useless in the secondary...Useless.
I'd even throw in Ware's name in there too...He didn't answer the bell tonight, really had very little impact on the game and wasn't due to being double teamed all the time either...He was simply unable to get to the QB.
