Romo. I think the networks can get over the bobble. He has. (I bet we see it every week.)

I won't be betting against you. It's week one and I'm already sick of it.

and whats wrong with what Jones did last night? He had the bad play where he ran out fo bounds late, but otherwise, whats the problem?

David

Other than running straight into the defenders and going down by shoestring tackles?

I counted 3 times last night including a long drawn out commentary on it by Michaels.

Add the people who sat next to me to the list of those who did not hear the bell. People who sit on their hands when our defense is on the field (and do not like noise) should stay home and watch the game on TV!!! This is not the Opera.

Roy didn't have a great game coverage wise, but then again I think the called coverages stunk too. Every snap, the CBs were at least 10 yards off the receivers and sometimes more and I don't think we played anything other than zone all night which is what allowed Manning to complete 68% of his passes.

Roy DID on the other hand make several plays that nobody wants to give him credit for. On top of that, he lead the team is tackles.

I had two major issues last night. One was the players fault, tackling stunk. The other was the defensive play called stunk. Wade is supposed to be a genius at defensive adjustment during the game. I didn't see many and none that actually worked. The CBs played 10+ yards off the reciever, and the Giants kept going into 1-step drops. Occasional zone blitzing with press coverage should have been able to bring that to a halt.

Not true he had some really nice between the tackle running for 4-5 yards a pop and kept his legs churning he did a great job on the screen pass. he hit the hole hard all anyone talks about is Barbers 4-1 run. Hey also had a good outlet pass where the defenders never touched him. It not like Barber dominated the game either.

I think people have agendas on the rb both produced and both played well

Funny stat Fox talked about last night was barber had only a 50% success rate on 3rd -1 and 4th -1 last year Ouch that is horrible hopefully last night trend on 4-1 will continue and not the other way around

The thing that concerns me most about Roy is his tackling. There was a time when he would meet anyone head on and knock the snot out of them. He dives at their feet now.

Exactly right! Very troublesome indeed. He shouldnt have to resort to doing the barell roll to tackle some 2nd string no one from the Giants.

Veterans Who Never Even Heard the Bell

  • Roy Williams – I have been a huge supporter, but I am honestly running out of excuses – he is out of position way too much. He provided zero impact on this game.
  • Ayodele – He is Claude Raines out there.
  • Spears – Different coach, same impact.
  • Canty – At least had one tackle for a loss, but zero pressure on Eli.
  • Henry – Really needed to step up given Newman’s injury. Meh.
What say you?

I am so tired of getting nothing from guys like Spears, Canty and poster-child Carpenter. And if Burnett can't ever stay healthy enough to contribute then he goes in this group too. We've invested far too much in our front seven to get such little return.

As for Roy, he used to just be a liability in coverage. But now, not only does he have a target on his chest, but he doesn't hardly make any other plays either. Most of the time he just tries to light someone up and ends up not even making the tackle. And it's almost laughable seeing him try to blitz, but at least it keeps him out of coverage.

As if we didn't already have The Catch to watch before, during, and after every 49ers game.

Yeah, I remember seeing that stat. First time I heard that, yet he had quite a few TDs last year, too.

Alot of truth in there. The defense was just awful last night, hopefully they can turn it around soon. The Colts were able to get by last year with a mediocre D, but I don't think we can.

Answered Immediately and Well

  • Spencer – he played pretty well for his rookie debut. He certainly made his presence known, and actually had a sack (though not a statistically relevant one) on that 2-pt conversion attempt.
  • Ratliff – filled in fairly well for the injured Ferguson. I’m still worried about our middle against the run (I hate seeing those 2-yd gains ripped into 7-yd chunks straight up the gut), but all-in-all I’d have to say that he stepped up when it was his time. He also had our only sack of the night!
  • Crayton – How about Patrick filling out the 2nd WR role? I’d venture to say that he did a pretty strong job of providing a valuable target as an alternate to TO.
  • Hurd - He came up big as a #3 when his number was called at the end of the game.
Answered (but somewhat muddled)

  • Reeves – I guess he did a serviceable job considering this was his first outing (Wade said as much), but that TD to Burress was really difficult to swallow. Cushion by design is one thing, but nobody designs a cushion 3 yards deep in the end zone (except on a Hail Mary).
OK – so some of the young bucks stepped up and answered the call. What bothered me were the veteran guys who are supposed to answer the call every week, but didn’t.

Veterans Who Never Even Heard the Bell

  • Roy Williams – I have been a huge supporter, but I am honestly running out of excuses – he is out of position way too much. He provided zero impact on this game.

On the money, nice work.

Spencer didn't make an enormous splash on defense but comparatively speaking, he was one of the 'stars' for the game really on D...Definitely saw more out of him in Week 1 then we did the inactivated Carpenter from last season in Week 1...THAT has to be a good sign, non?

It was my thinking earlier in the week that even without Glenn, I had good confidence that the offense and the WRs would respond...They had too, right?...And Crayton and Hurd certainly made some nice plays...I agree with the much older Madden that they have to get TO involved earlier in games...How come everyone on the planet understands this concept yet Dallas seems to fumble the ball on getting TO involved early?...Especially with no Glenn...Yet, Witten helped open things up conceivably and the offense eventually rolled despite the slower start...There is good depth at WR and they need to step up, Glenn or no Glenn...Now's their chance to shine...I think this will be an area we will see continued improvement...Still, let's face it, a healthy Glenn out there would've made things impossible for the Giants...How scary is that?

I'd also throw in McBriar and Folk on special teams, they played very important roles in the win as well...They definitely showed up.

I'm right there with you on Reeves too...I hated how he was getting abused by Plaxico but the cushion was really pretty ridiculous, especially what looked like 5 to 7 yard cushion from the 4 yard line that resulted in an easy TD....Just horrible positioning, who let that happen?...Jacques or the DC?...Just seems stupid....Still, he ended up calming down and playing much better in the 2nd half....As I recall though, he was like this before, up and down so hard to get too excited about things yet.

As for the 'losers' of the night, I too am tired of hearing the hype on Roy Williams...He's overrated, fact...I'm done with Roy...He's a seive back there and I can't even recall the last time he made a legitimate play, particularly tackling...Is Safety what he really should be playing after all?...Somehow I think maybe he should get moved to LB or something...He's utterly useless in the secondary...Useless.

I'd even throw in Ware's name in there too...He didn't answer the bell tonight, really had very little impact on the game and wasn't due to being double teamed all the time either...He was simply unable to get to the QB.

Glad to see someone mention Crayton. Is it just me, or does he get an insane amount of seperation for a guy who's "too slow". Oh yeah, he's averaging about 15 ypc for his career .. it's not just me.

I have been saying for a while it is not all about speed as it is in how a guy runs his routs. Jerry Rice and Irvin were not big speed guys but they knew how to use a burst of speed coming out of their breaks to get the seperation and add the hands of Crayton and you got a very good WR.

Our special teams, aside from the kicking and one big runback, seemed lackluster, pedestrian and flatfooted

I would agree on adding Ware. He played ok and created some pressure, but we need more from him if we're going to survive the losses due to injury. He can't just be good, he has to be great.

I would also add James to the original list. He can't cover anyone, and he got pushed backwards every time he went for a tackle. It's a bit disconcerting that someone who's played as poorly as James hasn't been supplanted by Carpenter or Burnett. Either neither of them is very good, or the coaches are really missing the ball. Because Bradie isn't bringing much to the table right now.

We need players with more intensity. Ratliff has it. He always plays with a passion, and when given a chance to get significant snaps, he almost always makes a play somewhere. Unfortunately, Canty and Spears do not. Canty is a marginal starter, which I guess is ok for a 4th rounder. Spears, OTOH, is a complete waste. His sack dance after Ratliff's sack was pathetic. But I guess if he wants to dance, he has to when someone else makes a play, because he never does himself.

I agree. He's just a good, solid football player. Hurd looks like one, too. Guys like Barber, Hurd, and Crayton - guys who weren't high picks but ultimately help the offense click - are exactly the sort of guys that we don't have on the other side of the ball.
