Thoughts about last night's defeat to the 49ers!

Heading into this matchup, I thought the 49ers were the best team in the conference, but I gave the Cowboys a punchers chance where anything could happen in 1 game, along with the biggest x factor of them playing a rookie QB. A lot of things had to break right for the Cowboys to pull off the upset, but came up short.

Offense

-Heading in I thought the Cowboys had to run enough to keep the 49er Defense honest. Not only to help against their pass rush, but 7 in coverage, would make throwing the football very difficult. We were able to accomplish this, until Pollard went down, I believe we had 20 yards rushing in the 2nd half. Prior to the injury, it was clear Zeke days are numbered as Pollard was getting almost all of the carries.

-Dak had to be great in this game and protect the football at all costs. Thought he had to do something he has struggled with all season long, throw to the outside. The 49ers took away the middle of the field and Dak really struggled throughout. He will get all the blame, especially for the 2 interceptions in the 1st half, but he isn't the only QB who has struggled against this defense, especially when the 49ers make them one dimensional. However, Dak needed to play better and he came up short.

-The Cowboys needed somebody other then Lamb/Shultz to show up in the passing game. Believe Hilton had 1 catch, Gallup didn't catch 1 pass. This was a huge problem throughout the season. I thought once they played a strong defense, this was going to get exposed, which it did. Think we should all be worried the way Gallup looked this season, shell of his former self and adding another starter to the position looks like a priority.

-Thought the offensive line did extremely well in pass protection. Yes, they gave up some pressures, but kept Dak clean for the most part. Tyler did have a few penalties, but the kid has arrived. The OL if healthy, should be fine next season.

-The offense just didn't make enough plays and lost the turnover battle. Against good teams, this will get you beat.

Defense

-I couldn't be more proud. Not only did they match their physicality, but tackled well and even was able to defend the run for 3 quarters. This tells me, they are extremely close from being a true championship level defense.

-Did a great job on everyone except George Kittles. He was the one matchup that really hurt our defense, I wonder how healthy Kearse truly was, he just didn't look right. Thought Wilson also had his struggles defending him and had a bad penalty that took away a sack.

-Thought once the 49ers found their run game late in the 3rd quarter, that was the game. That was the difference in this close, hard fought matchup. The 49ers were able to drive the entire field and score the TD, their final drive, they were able to grind it out and basically end the game.

-Heading in thought the Defense had to create multiple turnovers to win, Diggs came close twice, but they did a good job of protecting the football.

-Purdy was shaky at times, but as a backup QB, #1 thing is to not turn the ball over, which he did.

Special Teams

-Biggest surprise of the day, we actually won the Special Teams Battle. Yes, Maher missed 1 extra point, but made 2 FG's, Turpin was great on the kickoff returns and Joseph cause a fumble.

I know it's very disappointing to lose again on the same round, but in my eyes they are far closer today, then they were at the same point last year. 49ers never bullied us this time around, we actually held up in the trenches on both sides of the football. Offense did struggle again, but that's what this defense does, they give up 16 points a game. Clearly team needs to add more juice to the offense. Changes are coming, but we aren't that far off.

Have you looked at the mess that is the cap? This was your one chance, no way in hell this team wins 12 games next year. You draft low, 50 million for that disaster of a QB, your only good RB just broke his leg, byby speed. 8 wins next year max

Many said the same thing last year. We are a young team and should be competitive for a awhile. There aren't many huge holes to fill and the conference still looks very weak.

As much as I am frustrated with Dak realistically we all know he's back next year so we need to spend the off season recruiting support at WR as a priority, build the running game around TP with Malik in support & move Zeke on. The TE position looks solid in my opinion & the D only needs minor tweaks mainly in the secondary. Maybe I'm trying hard to see the positives at a crappy time but its a long break now until September so hopefully the off season is positive.

there are plenty of holes . you have a gaping hole at DT and one across from Diggs (perhaps Bland pans out) You only have 1 receiver that can get open. You have no TE's that block well but the young guys can play ok. and your Line is regressing all to go along with a QB that if he gets pressured too much he reverts to deer in headlights slow processing guy.

we will win double digit again next year but if they dont adress the holes again in offseason youll see more of the same.

they missed an opportunity there yesterday but it was great season they over acheived. If they squeak by yesterday the eagles probably trounce them anyway. If niners play like they did yeterday they will lose in philly

as dissapointed as I was in dak im more upset with diggs

and Im pretty much over it already as I expected 2 and done. Just didnt know what was going to cause us to go home

The reality is the Cowboys are a Super Bowl or failure team. San Francisco exposed are weaknesses offensively. Dak is a limited quarterback and can’t make throws outside the numbers and his deep ball is inconsistent. The problem is Dak will get the blame because he makes $40 million but the Cowboys position players are putrid outside of Lamb/Pollard. Zeke is a joke to San Francisco. They played coverage as soon as Pollard went out. The Cowboys have to hit free agency early and hard this offseason. Tyron might have earned another season he played well in the playoffs.

I see three priority needs at DT, CB and WR. As long as we keep some other in-house fa's, we aren't that far. Aging OL? I think the opposite, it looks like we have our 2 future Tackles, our Center is also very young.

Diggs drop was tough. Wilson tackle on Kittle was tough. 2 Dak INTs was tough. Losing Pollard was game over. Oh, and some clock management issues= outcome.

Ps, The Kittle catch was another " you got to be kidding me Moment". Diggs missed by a foot.

I think our OL is set for next year, maybe they add more depth. This offense appeared to be about Pollard, Lamb, Shultz. They needed another receiver to step up. As for the defense, just a few tweaks.

It doesn't take Kurt Warner to show me in depth All - 22 as I have it myself. There have been a great many times where QB decision making was at the foundation for plays that fail both yesterday and this season in general.
How many times did replay show open targets on plays yesterday where "IF" Dak had not already pre determined his throw regardless of coverage, a much better outcome would have occurred? And these failure to read defenses and slow to process real time decision making errors have been there all year. It's nothing new.

QB purgatory for this team is real. QB is the most important position unless your defense is an all time historic type.

Heck, you could easily make the case that the defense gave Dak an all time effort yesterday. They couldn't have helped much more considering how good that opponent was.

Piling on or not, this is a QB problem plain and simple.

I dont think Diggs missed I think he hit exactly what he aimed at, sad because Kittle was still juggling it.

You’re right, the D and ST’s came to play. The Oline did as well. Only one sack, and did anyone here Bosa’s name called after the first quarter?

I don’t even know what type of offense Kellen ran out there with the dink and dunk. We never tried to throw deep except on two passes, one complete to Lamb and the other awful throw to Gallup. Also, Dak missed TY on a walk in TD (you saw TY almost yelling at him on the sideline after). And why not give Malik actual carries?

if DQ leaves this thing is going to fall apart fast. How can you bring back Moore expecting different results after 6 years with Dak? Something has to change

Thanks for Sharing, Cowboyny ...

Your thread is a HUGE relief and refreshing break away from all of these vastly overwhelming random Dak threads.. lol

- Confidence from team and fans soared when we finally beat Tom Brady in Tampa.
- Midnight clock has struck and Cinderella story ends

OFFENSE

- Best chance for Cowboys to win this game was for Dak to have another Bucs like great game.
He did not .. had a poor game., once again Niners booted us outta playoff in repeated years.

- 1st INT was on Gallup poor route. 2nd INT was on Dak, forced it into defenders hands.
Almost had another INT for potential TD run back (Greenlaw) He also failed to see a wide open Hilton for a TD but forced
to Lamb, well covered by LB Warner instead - Dak could’ve thrown 4 INTs.

- i'm beginning to wonder if Dak may be in that Kirk Cousin to Derek Carr type range QB, .. a legit starting QB, but may not be an elite QB, one that makes
players better than what they are, and can take the team over the huddle and on verge of SB (ala Joe Burrows )
He has to have super strong surroundings players/coaching, scheme offense and stout defense to have chance at a SB.

- RBs: My other worst fear came to life- a serious injury to Pollard, and we have nuthin else at RB.
- Zeke is just too slow to be a playmaker other than goal-line/shrt yds. Average to below average burst, average receiver
and he’s never been highly elusive. We need a vast upgrade as a backup instead of zeke.
Coaches (ala Kellen) apparently did not trust backup Malik Davis vs blitzes, as he reported was lit up vs the rush...

- WR/TE
Gallup runs some really shoddy routes that create INTs- plus he just has no separation skills in ‘22
I’m not for gambling and banking on him returning to true form in ’23

I’m for getting Both a new-improved No.2 and No.3 WRs.
- Schultz had only TD, but bumbled very late in game with feet catch inbounds and not powering for one more yd for new 1st down.

Maybe I can see a B-tier contract if he agrees. (8 million? ) But not Kelcie, Andrews,
- Imo, Lamb has clearly answered questions as can he be an legit No.1 featured lead WR or is he just a No.2 by nature. Departure of Amari better allowed him that opportunity.
He’s a baller, he has an alpha male mentality, for one so lanky, he is very tough and durable and even swaggers after a big hit-lick.
If we can now get him a legit, reliable No.2 side kick bookend on other side.

OL
I thought OL pass blocked well. Many times Dak had necessary time to survey the field. Nick Bosa was not a factor vs Tyron or Tyler.
McGovern seem to have some problems vs Armstead, but overall the OL was not an problem.
Thought would’ve had chance to revved up run game if not for Pollard injury.

DEFENSE

- What surprised me and mightily impressed me was the play of the defense early and for most of the game.
Rookie Purdy was harassed so much that his rhythm and confidence was so disruptive.

- But to his credit, despite his rookie-ness, he never turned the ball over (yeh Diggs dropped a sure INT)
But Niners only scored one mere TD all game – mostly all FGs, and not until late in 4th quarter, did McCaffrey do any damage with a TD goal line run,
and a couple of first down catches.

- For most both Deebo and McCaffrey was shut down .. until the defense finally began to fatigue out, worn down and the dam finally broke.

- Our DL front were in Niners backfield, screens were read and disruptive, and early on, held their ground vs run.
We have a downhill defense that plays with the offense leading, ..but we were left on field way too much and it eventually showed.

- From Tampa to San Francisco playoff game- I’m now encouraged about the foundation and further adding/developing it into a special and elite defense.

- Hankins was ballin’. Great late round trade value in mid season
He’s a legit gap stuffer (wiiide body !) who I hope we can return on a 2 year deal. We need a quality backup for him though.
Be nice to FA find or trade late rounders for more vets such as him in offseason.

Offense did struggle again, but that's what this defense does, they give up 16 points a game. Clearly team needs to add more juice to the offense. Changes are coming, but we aren't that far off.
One random thought. Where was Fatman Boss?

OMG, that’s the first post I’ve seen that showed any sort of logical analysis and basic comprehension of yesterdays game. Off with with your head for posting such blasphemy as this!!! Lol!

No problem !
This front office is on it!
Maybe we can trade Lamb for a 5th round pick like we did Coop.

As fans, we have to take out the emotion and disappointment. 49ers were the better team and we needed to have many things go right to beat them, we just came up short.
