Thoughts after two games

This isn't really about only Dak. It's about a fear that our overall system will resemble what we saw last year............ lots of short stuff, inability to move the chains if a team stunts our run game, no real threats for chunk yardage other than Elliott in the run game, etc.

I think offensive issues we have seen is as much a coaching issue as it is who is playing QB.
Our offense isn’t balanced . Basically one dimensional. As long as we have the lead we can control the ball and the clock but if we get behind and forced to throw the ball more likely to struggle.

My greatest hope is we might have a defense which can make stops on key third downs to close out some games and create turnovers for shorter fields.

But if we have to come back in 4th qtr thru the air we’re probably in trouble.

Reason to have hope? I guess. But at this point I can’t put total faith in the guys leading this franchise.
Our hope should rest in the talent on the field to overcome our dysfunctional franchise.

We should hold our franchise accountable which we’ve been doing a very lousy job of as they continue to be the #1 franchise in revenue.

But in all fairness we should recognize the good decisions that are made and their potential until they fail. There’s nothing wrong with having hope as long as Hope isn’t the plan.

If it does work out then Jethro, Son and the Puppet will be due their credit.

Let's start with the surprises to me:

- I never thought I'd be saying this, but I am pretty content with where we are at DE and LB. I had concerns about both but the play of guys like Charlton and Thomas have alleviated a lot of concern. I thought Thomas was just going to be a JAG but he's been really impressive at LB in the role we will ask him to play.

The positives:

- I thought we'd be solid outside at CB. I've long said Jones is a CB, not a S. Between him and Awuzie, I think we have two guys that we should have confidence in over a full season. I can't remember the last time we had two guys outside with the athleticism these two guys have.

- Heath, who I think is just average, has had a good camp thus far. Really has locked down the SS position thus far and when in the past, I've noticed gaffes by him, I rarely have heard his name in telecasts, which to me is a good thing.

- OL, overall, has been what we should expect. Williams has had his struggles but I think as he gets more exposure, he'll be fine. Martin's injury, obviously is a big key.

- Pass rush has been pretty good and it seems, at least in preseason, they are messing around with more blitzing, trying to utilize some of the skill sets of our guys, specifically Jaylon Smith.

The concerns:

- People will try to write this off as just preseason, but I really worry about us being able to push the ball down the field on offense. I also worry that Prescott is going to be that dink and dunker. Last night, there was a play on that first drive where we were in 3rd and 7 and Cincy brought a blitz. Prescott had a bit of time but immediately threw a 3 yard out to Beasley who was essentially covered by two guys and stopped well short of the sticks. There was a lot of that last year as well. It has to change.

- While happy with Heath thus far, S overall is a real concern, especially if that hamstring is a lingering issue for Woods. Hopefully we find out something soon. I still don't have a clue as to what the front office was thinking only having three viable safeties on the roster when there were some decent, not great, options in FA that they could have brought in for cheap to give them a bit of a cushion. If Woods is out or it's an injury that nags him for awhile, we are simply in trouble at S and not many options now to handle it.

- Depth along the OL is concerning and something that sunk us last year. You can't assume we will remain healthy all year long. I won't go crazy yet on Fleming as he's a vet with a track record of competent play, but he's looked blah thus far. Looney is OK but he's really suited for a spot start or maybe a few series, not a longer term plug in as a backup. Green? Ugh. Edwards? He might be the best of the bunch even as a rookie.

- I still have concerns about DT but in fairness, they have not been beat up badly. But I wonder if they can hold up against better running teams.

- Pass catchers............. TE looks average and that might be me being kind. WR? Yes Austin is out but I am not one that thinks he's an elite playmaker at this point in his career. Gallup continues to flash potential but is a rookie. A couple of overhead shots in the first two games showed not a lot of separation from WRs. Maybe that's also due to scheme? On the TD were Prescott scrambled, if you watch the play, 4 receivers ran 4 simple routes, all were easily covered and it was only the breakdown of the play that freed Williams. So I still harbor concerns about this passing O.

- Slot CB. Not much to say there.

OL Edwards is not a rookie.

OL and Safety depth a concern.

WR group needs to shine in order to offset limitations/inexperience at TE.

Guys, it's pre-season. No need to wig out on anything... The first string players have played lights out during the games. It's when the "replacements" come in that we're going downhill... It means we have no depth. What else is new?

The Boys have a lot of work to do'
With our OL problems, our pass game is going to struggle unless the Coaches quickly remedy it.
On D, I want to see our pass rush kick it up a notch to help our secondary.

First Stringers look just fine and outplayed the other Teams starters so far. Its having a lot of garbage at 2nd and 3rd string especially at QB thats the Problem so far. Also O-Line and Safety Depth might be a big problem.

Other than that dont over analyze Preseason Games please.

I saw the same! Asking Prescott to throw downfield more is like asking Cam Newton to be a dink and dunk passer. Its just not in his DNA. I think Dak is an NFL QB but we will never see him slinging the ball all over the field.

Didn't see that with Aikman, either and he won 3 SBs.

Not to say history will repeat with this team, just noting that just because Dak isn't a "gunslinger" doesn't mean this team is destined for failure (no SB win)...

Dak Prescott in the pre season so far is:

13/18 for 125 yards. 6.9 YPA. 2 TD’s and 0 Int.

I realize the YPA isnt super high. But is this really a performance we are super worried about? I mean really?

The team isn't going to reveal all their plays in pre-season, does no good to light up the scoreboard and the stat sheet for games that don't count.

Of course they may still be a dink and dunk offense, depends on "the process". But we won't know that until the regular season starts, though you have to realize the team doesn't have a real deep ball threat, so to expect many deep passes is not realistic.

All I care about is wins and a SB victory, don't care how they do it as long as it happens...

Starters have looked well and that's encouraging. DL, once thought to be the bane of our existence, looks to be the deepest this team has seen in years.

OL and S depth were flaky before the injuries to Martin and Woods. Showers has probably played his last down for the Cowboys and I don't think he would have made the team anyway, but sucks to see him injured.

As is every season, it's been defined by injuries. If we can stay injury-free for the most part, we'll do alright. If the OL starts dropping, it's game over.

Lastly, Chaz Green is poop.
Don't insult poop like that

This excuse again?

The Eagles were picking outside of the top 10 originally. They identified the value of the player and went up and got him. The Cowboys sat still. Just watched it happen. With Wentz 1st overall on their board.

I know it hurts your fan feelings but that was an enormous mistake.
And this underscores the FO's stance they were banking on Romo playing however many more years.

Part of me believes they would have made a move for Wentz in that draft.

Oh well. That's all water under the bridge now.

That was largely my point and what I focused on. Not his accuracy or anything like that.

My concerns with this offense are that they again won't or can't challenge teams down the field.

Zeke was the #1 overall player on their board. Wentz was 7th.

I mean I get it. But then again, out of those 18 attempts he did take 2 shots down field. 1 fell incomplete to a tight end that was well covered. The other was completed for a 30 yard touchdown. 2 long attempts Per 18 passes aren’t that bad.

A little lacking on the mid range attempts though.

But if they attempt 2 long bombs for every 18 passes Dak throws, I think that should be decent.

That would mean about 54 shots down the field over the course of a season.

We need to see more passes in the 11-20 yard range though.

I am not talking about bombs.

I fear we can't/wont threaten teams that much beyond 7-10 yards due to limitations at WR/TE, the QB and the scheme.

With all of the investment in this offensive line, it is extremely disappointing.
